You know what, usually I come out of episodes with problems because I think too fucking much; See; Fan Fiction Review. So I henpeck and I bitch and I whine, but I clearly enjoy that, so it's oka. Otherwise I'd quit.
This week? This week I am mad. Sincerely mad.
Blatant sexism through ageism makes me fume.
Look, who fucked up? Writers Eric Carmelo and Nicole Snyder? The casting director? I don't know, but someone did. Maybe everyone fucked up and we have this mess of lusty older women being inappropriate and terrifying as some lame attempt to be funny. Oh, isn't it HI-larious the boys are getting sexual advances from old women at a reading of the will? Nothing grosser than an old woman, espeacilly if she's coming on to yo, amirite?
No, it is not made okay by the Peen of Death.
Number one, I never see this trope anywhere but in shows where men quake in fear for their masculinity. WELL. FITS RIGHT IN.
Number two, the ladies behavior was super inappropriate, no arguement there, but it's not being played for anything except laughs and to prove how pathetic they are. (as I say, it's not funny, and not even as an irony that Sam has the Peen of Death and they would probably die if he fucked them. Nothing funnier than women being punished for sex by DEATH.)
Number three, and pay attention, children, THEY'RE NOT THAT OLD.
Jensen Ackles was born in '78, and Dean is born in '79. Dean is anywhere from 36 to 38 this year (One year between 5/6 and a year in Purgatory). Padalecki was born in '82, and Sam in '83, so Sam is 31 or 32.
Heddy was played by Gillian Vigman (Born 1972), so she is only six years older than Jensen Ackles at real life 42. Well, there's a shout out that her character is 49, possibly? Unconfirmed. still we'll use this as a base. Unofficial internet chatter puts Debra McCabe, who played Beverly, at 44 or 45, her character's age is unlisted. Still, assuming the youngest possible age for Dean at 36, he is only 13 years younger than Heddy. Sam is 31, meaning that through the characters stated age, thwere is at most 18 years between them.
Fyi, George Clooney 1961= 54. Amal Clooney 1978= 36. 18 years. Clearly someone has forgotten to tell her he's weird and gross and his horniness should repulse her. I don't know about you, but I haven't seen much uproar about him robbing the cradle, or that he should be keeping his hands to himself.
And yet, OH NOES, A WOMAN SIX YEARS OLDER THAN DEAN DARES TO HIT ON THEM.
Not only are these women asked to play older than they really are, so they look young, because fuck, we can't have actual 49 year olds on our television screens, no, they have to be beautiful, beautiful mature women who the plot attempts to tell us are repulsive crones. They aren't. Oh, their behavior leaves something to be desired, make no mistake, but it somehow makes the whole thing sicker.
I guess someone must have liked that joke from waaaay back in 03x06 Red Sky at Morning when Sam got stuck with the old date played by Ellen Greer. The difference is, that actress was born in 1941, so she was 66 when the episode was shot, while Sam was 24. It was a 42 year old age gap and all Mrs. Case wanted to do was cuddle Sam. And I know the joke is supposed to be Sam Is Uncomfortable While Women Are Lascivious At Him, because Dean? Dean would have rolled with that shit. At least, the Dean I presume to know would have, which is why the plot does everything it can to keep Dean away from them, and have him snarking at OMG OLD LADIES WANT U Sam, which, no offense? The Dean I know is cool with sex. He should have been laughing at Sam, not the women.
But this kind of revolting sexism makes me so mad, because all three of the women in this episode are reduced to sex objects, one to be desired because she's young, the other two to be derided because they're old. ALl of them are stupid and greedy AND FUCK YOU VERY MUCH EVERYONE INVOLVED WITH THIS EPISODE.
Ugh, I'm not even going to waste time on the rest of this hideous episode.
- Rich people are all stupid and basically greedy charicatures, blue collar bias FTW.
- This is not the way real East Coast money behaves. This is your skewed idea of it and it fails.
- Locking someone up in an attic for twenty years is apparently the kind thing to do? Doesn't anyone fucking think that you have to educate people?
- You fail at a Clue knock off. You fail so hard.
- Mark of Cain, good to see you.
- 3rd monster this season to be basicially misunderstood and trying to be better in a world where the cards are always stacked against them.
- Yeah. Good to know all that shit that went down in that last episode was so important.
I am going to go scream in a corner now. YOU OWE ME, SPN.
