Hmm. Both my chemistry professor and my biology professor have within the past day or so referred me to a very interesting article/application. It would seem that UAB has a pretty upstanding HIV research program, and one aspect of this is their yearly jaunts to Zambia for study/local healthcare/improving the lives of the impoverished. They accept undergrads, particularly interested premeds, paying for all of the airfare, offering room and such, as well as a $1000 monthly stipend. Of course, though I would be getting some credit, I would also have to put some of my classes on hold, as I'd be leaving for Zambia in mid-July and staying for about a year. But at the same time, this is the direction I've always wanted my life to go, and I technically already have sophomore standing. Of course, I might go through GuildWars/internet/frienship withdrawal for a while, and there's no denying that living conditions will be far from what I'm used to, and probably a little dangerous. But it's a fantastic opportunity, and after I talk to my various advisors and the scholarship people, I'm going to apply. So, hopefully, if everything works out, this time next year I will be in Zambia helping to research HIV and helping to administer healthcare to the people suffering.
My God. When did we grow up?
