Ryo slouched on his sofa as he stared at his phone for the hundredth time. Uchi still had not replied his message and it was starting to aggravate him. The only other person who could annoy him was Ueda Tatsuya. Thinking back on their last meeting, Ryo was shocked when he saw his ex-fling. Who knew fate was this cruel to him. First he lost Uchi and now he was stuck with Ueda.

Ryo leaned back and slowly recalled how he met Ueda at a small quaint bookshop. He mistook the older man as the shopkeeper and despite his mistake; Ueda helped him search for the vintage Playboy magazine he was looking for. He smirked at the image of Ueda smiling shyly at him before they parted ways and again when they met at the same bookshop.

The first impression of Ueda was that he was a pretty, meek visual kei poser who loved reading. He gave off that loner vibe and kept mostly to himself. There had always been something about Ueda that irritated the fuck out of him. Something Ryo could not point out. Maybe he just felt that the spiky blonde boy was odd. Or maybe it was because Ueda was very different from him.

When Uchi went away for a month to visit his hometown, Ryo got lonely. Call him desperate but Ryo wanted company and intimacy. He stupidly picked up his phone and called Ueda to meet at his house. Moments later and god knows what happened, he was in bed with the shy boy. Ryo regretted taking advantage of Ueda's romantic interest in him and cheating on Uchi.

When Uchi came back, Ryo was more than delighted. He forgot what happened with Ueda until the boy urgently wanted to meet up with him. That was the day Ueda told him that he was pregnant. At first he didn't believe it and was even convinced that Ueda was lying.

Get rid of it.

Those were his words. Of all people, why would he want a kid with Ueda Tatsuya? He did not want to have a lifetime bond with someone he did not love. He was not ready to settle down. He was still young and reckless. There is no room in his bachelor pad for a crib. He was in love with Uchi.

Years later, he bumped into the awkward man at a coffee place. To his amazement, Ueda had blossomed into a very attractive man. He hesitated at first but decided to go up to his ex-fling, knowing how much he can get under his skin. After Ueda’s cold words and demeanour annoyed him, Ryo could not help but hit Ueda where it stung the most. Maybe….just maybe...he found gratification in hurting Ueda because Ueda never retaliated back.
Ryo grabbed a cushion and screamed in it, muffling his annoyance. The person who he had casted off so brusquely was now his co-worker.

Was this Karma? He thought before getting mindlessly distracted by a random variety show on his television while waiting for his instant curry rice to be heated in the microwave.

“Neko funjatta~ Neko funjatta~” Mizuki sang as she tied 2 ponytails on Taguchi’s hair. “Nyan~ Nyan~ Nyan~”

“That’s not how the song goes~!” Koki chuckled and cuddled the little girl.

“But I don’t know the rest!” Mizuki exclaimed and continued singing the cat song she learned in school to herself.

“Okie dokie~ Your daddy will be back soon~ What shall we have for dinner tonight?” Taguchi picked Mizuki up and walked to the kitchen.

“You should make cookies.” Mizuki replied excitedly. Her 2 babysitters looked at her deceiving angelic face in mild suspicion and Taguchi placed her on the countertop.

“Why cookies~?” Koki said and opened the fridge.

“Because Daddy was looking a bit sad this morning. Cookies will make him feel better right? I know cookies make me feel better.” Mizuki explained with a smile. Both men looked at each other again before continuing to busy themselves around the kitchen.

“But cookies will give you a toothache~” Taguchi said teasingly, hoping to brush it off as Koki placed vegetables on the counter.

“What are you making?” Mizuki asked, moving closer to take a peek.

“Saba fish and rice!” Koki replied happily but Mizuki’s face scrunched up.

“I don’t like fish~!” she cried out and gave a pout. “I want beef~!”

While the 2 men were trying to persuade the child that fishes were yummy, the doorbell rang. Koki stopped tickling Mizuki and ran to the door. He was a little surprised to see Ueda and Kame looking rather grim.

“Are you guys okay?” Koki asked as Tatsuya stepped inside without answering and took off his shoes.

“Something bad happened at work. I’ll tell later.” Kame sighed, “Tatchan waited for me to finish work so we bought dinner for everyone. Sorry for taking so long. I hope you don’t mind Pasta.”

“Not at all!” Koki took the plastic bags from Kame as the delicious aroma of spiced tomatoes and melted cheese filled the room. “Thanks for dropping by.”

“"DADDY~!" Mizuki screamed in delight and ran towards Tatsuya.

"Hi Sweetheart!" Tatsuya bent down and picked up his daughter, kissing both her cheeks. "I bought pasta for dinner. Your favourite right?"

"Yay~! I don't have to eat fish~!" The little girl cheered. "How was your day Daddy?"

"It was awful~!" Tatsuya replied in a child-like voice and spun his daughter around. "Because Daddy misses you soooo muchie~"

Mizuki giggled in excitement and kissed her daddy back.

"You don't have to miss me now! I'm here!" Mizuki said with a big smile. “OH! Uncle Kame-chan is here too! Hello~!”

Mizuki waved at Kazuya, melting his heart. Everytime Kazuya saw that little girl, he was amazed how much she grew. He had been there since the day she was born and up to now. It baffled him greatly how someone could not love her.

Except for that one person...

"Go help Uncle Koki and Uncle Taguchi set the table~" Tatsuya kissed Mizuki again and placed her down.

“Okie dokie Daddy~” She said and trotted off to the kitchen as quickly as her small legs could. Kazuya waited until Mizuki was out of earshot when he asked Tatsuya the inevitable question.

“How was the meeting just now? I hear that you left quickly after. I was kind of surprised when I saw you at the front desk when I was leaving the office.” Kazuya asked airily.

“The meeting sucks.” Tatsuya shrugged, “What did you expect? That I embraced the guy who got me thrown out of university and disowned by my parents?”

“Tatsuya....” Kazuya sighed, “I know how hard your life had been these past years..I’m not expecting you to overlook his mistakes...But you have to work with him now..”

“I don’t have to work with him...” Tatsuya deterred his eyes and hissed lowly, so softly that Kazuya almost did not hear him.

“You don’t?” Kazuya asked, not knowing what his friend meant.

“I don’t have to work with him..” Tatsuya repeated slightly louder, masking his anger with a small smile and walked to the kitchen. “He doesn’t deserve to work at Love Scripts.”

Kazuya stood there staring at Tatsuya’s back. He was worried for his friend. He remembered the first time he met Tatsuya working as a kitchen helper at the host club where he used to work. Tatsuya was homeless and 4 months into his pregnancy. He could not bear to see a pregnant person work all night at a sleazy place. So he approached the exhausted man after his shift, told him to get all his stuff and get in his car.

He drove Tatsuya to his mother’s inn at a small town outside of Tokyo and persuaded his mum to hire Tatsuya. His mother eventually gave into Kazuya’s stubbornness and hired Tatsuya as a helper. But there was no room vacant at that time so the old lady could only offer Tatsuya a small rundown garden shed at the back of her inn. Kazuya vividly recalled scolding his mother for even suggesting that but when he turned around, he saw Tatsuya’s crying face. Tears of appreciation were streaming down his cheeks as he bowed to Kazuya and Mrs Kamenashi in immense gratitude. Kazuya was puzzled, but as Tatsuya stepped into the shed, Tatsuya called it perfect and said he was home. Kazuya felt a tug on his chest. Though it was not much on his part, he was glad to help Tatsuya in any way.

They grew closer and Kazuya slowly learned about a bastard named, Nishikido Ryo.Tatsuya had come a long way. Not only did Tatsuya became a famous author, he got Kazuya a job at Love Script as a Human Resource Admin and out of the shady profession as a host. It was a respected job which helped stop his mother from nagging at him. Kazuya sighed inwardly. He could almost hear his mother’s annoying high pitched voice.

“Uncle Kame-chan~ Hurry~ Or I will eat your pasta!” Mizuki called out, breaking him away from his thoughts.

“Oi~ oi~ Don’t be greedy~!” Kame said, walking to the dinner table and took his seat.

It worried him that Tatsuya was forced by fate to face his past. He could tell that Tatsuya was emotionally scarred and the wound was deep.

“Taguchi, what’s that in your hair?”Kame asked, pointing at the taller man’s head.

“Eh?” Taguchi ran felt his hair and pulled out 2 hairbands. “AH! I forgot Mizuki tied my hair just now!”

Mizuki exploded in fits of giggles when Taguchi handed her back the hair accessories. Kame looked over at Tatsuya who was beaming at his daughter. Whatever Tatsuya’s decisions were with Nishikido Ryo, Kazuya promised himself that he will continue to be a good friend.

For now, Kazuya was going to enjoy his dinner....before a little rascal steals one of his meatballs from his plate.
