"Maternity care in the US is in crisis..."

Did you know that the US has the second highest newborn death rate in the developed world?

I want you to go see this movie, no matter who you are.

I can't stop thinking about this issue lately. I find myself thinking about it all the time, how birth has become medicalized in America and what an incredible impact I think that is having on us. And how so many pregnant women I know (and worse, their husbands/partners) are so fearful of the process of birth that they have convinced themselves that something is "going to go wrong" and that they need to be in the hospital...and then how the probability that their birth will be forced along and rushed with chemicals and/or become an unnecessary Caesarean is multiplied just by setting foot on the premises...In November of 2005, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported the national cesarean birth rate was the highest ever at 29.1%, which is over a quarter of all deliveries. This means that over 1 in 4 women will experience a cesarean delivery in this country...and no, they are NOT all medically necessary.

Please consider seeing this movie. I cry evey time I watch the trailer remembering what an incredible, crazy, intense, scary, and heart-bending adventure I had with my birth. Birth is beautiful stuff. It needs to be protected before it is taken away from us completely, and if you see this film you'll see just how real that danger really is.
