So, the Honda is a great car, but it's kind of on its way out. It doesn't make it over the pass and isn't really reliable for trips to grandma's house...it's been a good workhorse, but it was time for us to look at a new set of wheels for our baby.
Well, we were going to buy a Subaru wagon...you know, upgrade to a real fambly ride, with room for the surfboard and the camping gear, 4wd, all of that. We got excited and started shopping around...but then we had a flash of guilt (concern? wisdom?) over buying yet another petroleum powered automobile in this day and age.
Together we decided that maybe it was time to fulfill what for me has been a longtime wish to get an '80's Mercedes Diesel sedan and run it on biodiesel. We started looking around and asked a few friends and lists for advice...which turned into an offer of a gift from Jim Mason, who wouldn't hear of us paying him for his old Mercedes daily driver that he's not using any more. A little work and it would be in tip top shape, he said, and if there's anyone I trust to understand engines, it's Jim. So yesterday Tom and Jim got started, and she's running like a top. Thus, we are the proud and slightly meeked owners of a 1981 240D sedan (which we have decided we are going to paint Tiffany blue - c'mon, it's adorable - and fly little flags of random nations on the front of the hood, like we're leading a motorcade). These cars are used as taxis all over Europe, as I hear it...they're like tanks. Plus, now Jim is the proud owner of our old Honda Accord, which he'll be converting to run on garbage as a demonstration vehicle for DIY gassification technology.
Whee!
