On Taking Time
TrueCrypt is a very nice drive/file-level encrypter, but gosh: 19999 MB NTFS file with 50957951 sectors takes 5754 seconds to format. Ouch.
Still better than a full-quality H.264 DVD encode, which takes about 24 hours on my machine. Ouch. The worst part is that it doesn’t really give noticeably better quality compared to a vanilla DivX encode that ( Read more... ) -

A useful bit of Windows shell scriptrickery
Issue: I have too many songs in my iTunes library.
Solution: Delete songs from the library!
I want to get rid of songs that I don’t like, and, at this point, even just songs I’m a bit ambivalent about.
Complication:
Because I have several thousand songs I’ve listened to less than twice, I have a Smart Playlist set up that selects songs with a Play ( Read more... ) -
jEdit is Genius (Soft Tabs done Right)
Problem: By default, I like to use a rather nonstandard tab width of six (6) characters. In and of itself, this is not a problem, except that I also tend to align otherwise off-by-one-or-two sections of code with a space or three. This results in code that looks a bit weird when viewed with an editor that thinks tabs should be anything but six ( Read more... ) -

So, what, I just spent four hours figuring out the Right Way to get two shell scripts to “compile” Adblock’s source into a release and upload it without prompting me for a password or embedding the password in the uploader script itself…
Damn.
Oh well. At least I now have more experience with generating RSA keys, configuring OpenSSH, and PuTTY/ ( Read more... ) -

Damn. If I weren’t going college I’d probably fire off my resume. I’m a bit light on the C++ side of things, but I soon plan to re-investigate getting msvc compilation of the Firefox codebase working… at least I’m (much) stronger on the JS side of things.
