And so, apparently, can Rusty's version of DW.
Lazing around this afternoon, making Christmas stockings, I decided to rewatch DW1--for one thing, I did want to see "Dalek" again, for the information about the Time War.....I'm not too keen on rewatching any more--except maybe a dose of Moffat and Captain Jack....
There really can't be any other explanation except that Moffat is reworking and repairing Rusty's DW. There are even lines that reappear, under improved circumstances, in DW5. For instance, Mickey lectures the Doctor about being "dangerous," later echoed by Rory. And he's researched the Doctor, after his first encounter--again, echoed by Rory.
Except Mickey is "Mickey the Idiot" and treated like a complete dolt by Jackie, Rose, and the Doctor--and Mickey bears the treatment out: he is stupid, lazy, cowardly, and self absorbed....except when he inexplicably becomes a computer whiz in "World War Three," but that doesn't last: he quickly relapses. Neither the Doctor nor Rose wants Mickey around; Mickey declines a half-hearted invitation to travel on the grounds that he is a coward....The Doctor also doesn't want Jackie around; he's quite clear that he "doesn't do domestic."
What a contrast when Moffat tackles similar subject matter. Rory is comic relief--but not because he's a stupid buffoon; the comedy of Rory derives from the fact that Rory reacts like a normal person....Hence, his "What is WRONG with you people?!" when Amy and the Doctor celebrate encountering vampires. But Rory comes around: his initial distrust and sense of competition with the Doctor dissipates; he and Eleven develop a relationship that is a friendship, and a comrades in arms....and really, very much that of a son-in-law and father-in-law. Rory is also welcomed into the TARDIS: there's initial uneasiness all around about this idea, but Eleven is right--Amy can't go off and live a different live, secret from Rory, and maintain her relationship with Rory. So Rory joins, and they all work out their relationships with each other. Moffat's Doctor is all about forging and maintaining relationships--not dividing people from each other and shattering relationships, as Rusty's Nine deliberately did.
And I did get around to "Dalek"--and got hit over the head just as if it were the first time by the hateful anti-American attitude in the show. Which made me think of Moffat's comment that the DW6 opener is a US "love letter"....and it struck me that at least part of that opener is set in Utah--the very setting of the contemptuous, ugly "Dalek"......................
