The observation room was flooded with an orange light, and Searle sat on the bench before the window with his lips in a smile. The smile scared Capa, who stood a few feet behind him. Searle only ever smiled in here anymore. The sun was his addiction, for even as it burned his skin and wrought him slowly blind, he watched it for hours.
"Searle?" He only turned around when Capa commanded Icarus to lower the intensity of the light. "Searle, are you alright?"
"What makes you say that?" He stood from the bench and removed his sunglasses, smiling wider now.
"I hardly see you anymore."
"Well, I...I lose track of time."
Capa took a step forward, startling Searle, who dropped the sunglasses onto the carpet. He reached out and touched Searle's arm.
"You don't seem alright."
Searle's smile fell. "None of us is alright, Capa."
"I know." He turned so that he and Searle were standing side by side.
Searle bent down to pick up the sunglasses, and he fetched another pair from his pocket for Capa. "Do you want to watch the sun with me?" he asked.
"Sure," Capa answered.
