Bottom line is that "believing" is basically just claiming to know something in the absence of any evidence or basis of fact. Believing allows you not to think. I don't want my way of life to be in direct opposition to thinking. I used to say "I'd like to believe in God and Heaven, but I just can't" but now I think that the idea of an all-knowing, all-seeing being (basically a glorified voyeur) is actually a very negative idea.
Forgiveness of sins is very negative as well. I've heard so many preachers and pastors talk about how they used to do drugs and lead very sinful lives before they "found" God. It's a very strange stance to take to say that "basically, without the man upstairs I'd be raping everybody and doing meth."
YESSSSS, exactly! Some people are using church as a kind of rehab. It's fucking stupid! You hear all kinds of people that said that they used to do drugs and then they started going to church. Look, just because you found community doesn't mean an event 2000 years ago actually took place. Anyway, great comment. Please say that in the Facebook thread. It's still going on actually....on my profile page and the latest one is on the "My Notes" section of this very entry ...because it's always automatically imported from LJ to FB.
That whole "what if you're wrong?" argument may piss me off the most. The idea of scaring people into religion...if there were a God, I'd think he wouldn't be too accepting of the fact that you're only in it to save your own ass.
That's exactly right...I feel the same way. I feel like some people just can't think about this shit deeply enough. Anyway...PLEASE make these comments on the facebook thread...the one on this entry on My Notes....you can find the link on my profile page...might have view older entries but it's there...
I don't know if I posted in the right place but I'm pretty sure I did. I just don't use facebook that much. I hope I don't get too much shit for saying what I believe, but it's about fucking time that I can be honest.
Yeah, it was in the right place. I should have told you...but dad was a part of one of those threads...I hope that's OK...thanks for posting. I was feeling like I needed some help. Stephen Hill is a big fucking douchebag.
