Crossovers Ate My Brain

Jun 06, 2004 22:10

Tennis again today: it's almost getting to be a habit. But forget that - I want to talk about the ridiculous amounts of time I spend thinking about fictional characters with large eyes.

Mostly I think about crossovers, my first and only true love. Mostly, I just wish that they would leave me alone. So in hopes of that, I'm going to exorcise summarize a few of them here.

Because it's appropriate : Death Note/Scorpion Shards

I guess I could explain about Scorpion Shards, although it's really better read than summarized. YA scifi/fantasy triolgy by Neal Shusterman. Maybe I'll just stick to saying that Dillon, the main character, sees patterns. That can mean anything from how to hit a pool ball just right, to how to demolish a building, to how to destroy a person's entire life just by suggesting something, to how to end the world by manipulating market forces. After overcoming his desire to be evil (the first book), he has this harebrained scheme to "save" humanity by starting his own cult (the second book). It goes badly, and there's clean-up (the third book).

Anyway, just want to see him track Kira down, something he could easily do. This is a terribly destructive crossover idea because the whole point of Death Note is that Raito and his canon nemesis, L, are diabolically clever. Bringing in someone who is even cleverer would kind of destroy the series. Which is why I should just stop thinking about it. Now.

Because I luv character interaction: Yami no Matsuei/Naruto

This one is just silly. Technically it'd be YnM AU/Naruto Universe. I think it'd be cool if Tsuzuki, Hisoka, and Terazuma (Tsuzuki's rival) were a ninja team. But, um, Tsuzuki would be female, because the teams always seem to be two guys one girl, and he'd make the best girl. Why? Just because!

OK, it's because I like thinking about him and Hisoka in a younger guy/older girl relationship, and about Terazuma getting really angry about his dependence on his "lazy, incompetent female bum rival" after transforming to that giant shikigami form he has. Interaction with established Naruto characters is optional but would probably be for the best, perhaps at a second chuunin exam. And hey! The Shikigamis are summons! See, somehow it all works out.

I'm surprised you don't see this kind of fic more often, as the Naruto universe is pretty cool and seems (to me) to invite more original character types of stuff. Only, since I'm not original enough for that, I have to steal my characters from somewhere else. Wait, forget that, you did see this kind of fic. And it's bad. Nurrrr.

Because I luv plot: 3x3 Eyes/Inuyasha

You know, I actually outlined this one all the way through. And then I never thought about it again. See, exorcisms do work! Assuming everyone knows Inuyasha, I'll just say that 3x3 Eyes stars a three-eyed immortal from Tibet with a split personality (Pai), and the man whose soul she ate. Literally (Yakumo). They're looking for a statue that will turn her into a human being.

At this point, the plot should be obvious. What does Inuyasha's Shikon no Tama do? I had all kinds of weird shenanigans plotted as well, but that just about sums it up right there. Inuyasha/Kagome and Pai/Yakumo are two parallel couples, just with the split-personality demon member switched to the other gender. It's an ascetically appealing crossover.

And, Because There Aren't Enough Excuses in the World for This One: Kenshin/the Lioness Quartet

This one revolves around the fact that Alanna, like Kenshin, is a short, red-headed, purple-eyed swordsman. That's it. I am a very shallow person. Anyway, the way this one would work would be for Alanna's country to send a delegation to Japan, perhaps to negotiate bulk sword sales because there's a war. The young prince/princess is given permission to come along for diplomatic training; Alanna comes too as a kind of bodyguard-cum-babysitter. And brings her kids. Who end up taking lessons from Kaoru at the dojo, along with Alanna herself who is always looking to learn a new style.

It doesn't go anywhere, though, which is why I never bothered to even outline. I like outlines - they're so much more efficient than just thinking things in your head, where sometimes they get lost or repeat themselves.

Actually I think I've read more crossovers than all other types of fanfic combined. Dunno why--more room for invention? Less slavish devotion to canon without the OOC? Maybe because crossovers tend to have more of a focus on plot. *shrugs*

EDIT: And, because this is so appropriate it hurts, I present to you Random Pairing Generator. Gaked from falxumbra.

A few of the cooler ones I got:

Dorthy (Big O)/White Rabbit (Alice in Wonderland) - beastiality. Big O had Alice vibes, right? Or was it Wizard of Oz? (hates show)
Integra Hellsing (Hellsing)/Lawrence of Arabia - it has good cold/hot poetic symetry to it, no?
The Dude (The Big Lebowski)/Peggy Hill (King of the Hill) - surprisingly normal couple, I can see this one
Elminister (Forgotten Realms)/Godzilla - more beastiality, only this time it's frightening
Genghis Khan/Judas Iscariot - DUDE, that would be awesome!
Lieutenant Chang (Mulan)/Lucius Malfoy - I'll make a man out of YOU *leers*

That last line was almost too easy. I'm disturbed, though: of the male/male pairings, the ones that seemed most fitting were the ones involving some kind of dominant/submissive relationship. Methinks I've been exposed to too much Japanese porn.
