Can someone please explain me, why almost every new fandom has a 'kink meme' going on and it's not about actual kinks?

*confused*

I get kink bingo, because they actually have kinks in there. I get fluff bingo, or even anon memes (though I don't see the appeal, sorry). But I just don't understand why they call it a kink meme if it has nothing to do actual kinks.

Example:

Just fullfilled this prompt at kink_meme, where someone wanted Sherlock to make John a cup of tea and then they cuddled in front of the telly!

Very lovely! But where's the kink? If Sherlock has a kink for... I don't know. Watching John's adam's apple bob as he drinks hot tea he made, and then he goes and wanks in the kitchen, I could agree that yes, he has some kind of a kink. But this prompt sounds like your everyday schmoop. Nothing wrong with a scene of domesticity, but it's not very kinky is it?

I can think of various ways of making drinking tea kinky and now just squicked myself thinking of someone licking extra sweet tea from someone's armpit because their mother was anally clean and hated sweeteners in tea and this is a weird kinky rebellion against such ideals, but...

Anyway!

It seems like people are also mixing concepts of 'genre' and 'kink'. Mpreg is a genre. AU is a genre. Neither is a kink, unless it's a fic where a character has an overwhelming urge to have sex with a pregnant man, or if the AU is filled with tentacle porn or something other kinky stuff.

I'm sorry but this freaks me out!

The other thing I'm kind of... annoyed of, is voyeurism kink used in Inception fics. The guys have sex in the dreamscape and get off by people watching it. By people, I mean their own subconscious. It's like shagging in front of a telly. Sure, newbies and regular people would be all meep, but these guys work in the dreamscape. I wonder if it would be such a thing for them. Also, if you work in people's minds, would you want to make it so easy to sexualize your work environment? Not that people don't think of sex anyway...

Meh, I guess I'm just tired and cranky this morning. Spent most of the night reading a hideously long (almost 200 K words) fic from an old fandom, where the author warned about rough sex and 'incestuous' themes (OaT fic, with some Mac/Michael), but chose not to warn about heavy duty drug use, real mental problems and the fact that the ending was like one of those angst fics where the slight happiness at the end does not compensate all the endless pages of misery.

Crap Magnet! That's me...

Oh, and yes, I've been whining a lot lately and sounding like a total elitist here. This is probably because I have time to read a lot of fic in new fandoms these days and all the small annoyances I'd usually let slip by bug me more than usual. Of course I also am an elitist when it comes to fic, especially if your definition of the word is as narrow as 'someone who wants logical categories, warnings and actual stories'.

My preferences, my journal. You don't have to like my view, but do try not to be a condescending bastard and stop making sly remarks of me being an elitist and insinuating that having some taste and an opinion is somehow wrong.

There's a world of difference between 'I disagree' and 'you're wrong'.

fandom, whine
