not looking so good

Aug 17, 2010 15:55

Today, I intend to do absolutely nothing. Well, maybe take out the trash, but then will come back home and just sit here and read.

The first two fics I read today made me wonder if I should change my plan. The first fic was 80% retelling of the canon episode, with actual canon dialogue (boring!) and in the second one, Sherlock Holmes was an unicorn.

*headdesk*

I don't think the badge works anymore. I should have *crap magnet* printed on a T-shirt or something....

Anyway, here are a few movies and telly shows I've been watching... So of course there's a rant! What were you thinking?

Identity

I still have problems watching Aidan Gillen on telly, because I keep thinking of him looking good and rimming another man. I know, QAF ate my brain. Other than that, 95% of this show was actually good.

The problem was, the 5% that was bad was the important part. I hated the cliched office politics, Anthony had no good reason hating Bloom from the beginning (though he was right), and the ending implying that Bloom didn't go with his lover because of Martha was just stupid. It worked when the Martha/Bloom was all one sided UST with Bloom never even noticing. But this? No.

Though I think I'll watch the second series if there'll ever be one.

Inception

Yes, went to see this a week ago (and I know I mentioned it earlier, yes), and have been wading to my hips in fic ever since. I can honestly say I've read most Arthur/Eames there is, and goddamn it people! Why must every fandom make the same mistakes?

*breathe*

Okay, about the movie first: It was good. A few scenes could have been shorter, but none of the 2.5 hours felt boring. The story was well told, even though yeah, the fast pace and the telling through a newbie really helped with lots of weird logic. This is what the Matrix trilogy should have been.

Absolutely love the score, so once again thank you Hans Zimmer. The acting was good. The logic was decentish and I loved the way lots of things were left unexplained.

So why is the fanon so damn rigid?

After one comment by Eames in the movie, Arthur really is a stick in the mud in fanon. He has no imagination and seems to only love his guns and/or suits. Of course! It's not like this was the character calling others asshole in the movie, or who got them out of the jam by thinking outside the box... Oh no....

Eames is the cliched hero of all Brits who Sound Like Spike, with all the 'love', 'pet' etc. in the dialogue. Of course he did call Arthur darling once, so this makes perfect sense. He dresses constantly badly, flirts with everyone and then Nobody Understands His Awesomeness boo hoo. This from the guy who uses grenade launchers and kicks ass, and who's chosen to live in Mombasa of all places. Yeah. Makes perfect sense.

All the other characters seem to be around to play the matchmaker. Cobb is angsty!daddy who returns to the job after five minutes with his kids. Saito is either mysteriously mysterious, or then he sounds like an American teenager. Ariadne is the giggly (or angsty) 'let's get the guys together by taking them to a gay bar' -mary sue. Mal of course is either mentioned as Cobb Angst Moment, or the author didn't understand that the Mal we saw was a memory and not a real person.

Where is the variety? This fandom has so many different paths it could go, the fics could all be awesome! And now it seems almost everybody sticks to a certain script. If I read one more leering campy Eames pines after an oblivious but well dressed Arthur I'm gonna scream.

*cough*

This is not to say there isn't good fic! You just have to ignore the cliches on most of them.

Whine whine bitch bitch. You knew that was gonna happen, right?

Absolutely loved the show, though the middle episode was a bit weak. They ended it perfectly (reminded me of SPN season one), and it gives you a perfect opportunity to write all sorts of fics about it.

... except I can't help laughing at the damn unicorn thing! And let's not forget that while Sherlock is a sociopath, John isn't the poster boy for mental health.

Oh and I have a small crush on Lestrade. He looks like a reliable sheep dog!

I think I ranted about spelling certain names or theorems wrong (Ockham's razor? really?), but my latest pet peeve is a character called Hans Solo. I didn't think Corellia was situated in northern Europe! But this might explain the leather pants.... There was even a joke in Mock the Week where a guy called him Hans, and I wanted to throw a brick through the telly. Han! Han Solo. It can't be that difficult people!

/ranty rant rant

Now that I managed to fill my monthly quota of being a bitter old fandom queen, I have nothing to say. It's not like I'm posting any fic, so yes it's easy to just sit back and fume. :)

rant, telly, movie, fic babble, fandom, whine
