The weirdest part of this fandom is that the fanon seems so restrictive. I'm used to weird stuff, from wingfics to mpregs to those terrible terrible high school AUs, but while there's some of that going on here as well, the characters are virtually carbon copies from fic to fic without having any real basis on canon.
It freaks me out!
Scribbling down some vague ideas about a fic (yeah, you knew I would), I realized I see both Eames and Arthur quite similar in a way; both use perceptions to hide what and who they really are. Arthur probably does it more unintentionally, but Eames is totally aware of what people see, and he's playing with that. Eames as a character is quite interesting to me; he seems like a mixture of a James Bond sidekick (like Mathis in the new ones) and the secret agent himself. All the possibilities we could write of, and people choose a cliche. What a surprise.
I had a very happy smile on my face reading you wax poetry about suits. Yes!
And for crying out loud! The people who write a virginal simpering Arthur... Have they ever actually watched the movie? He's clearly work oriented, but there is no sign that he's awkward in social situations, and he can be smooth... *cough*
Oh, and Saito is awesome! I could just stare at the man all day, but then again I've adored Ken Watanabe for a while. There's really too little Saito fic there, and though I would like to read more about him and Dom, I wouldn't mind a combination of Saito, Eames and Arthur.

You're not the only one who is freaked out! I've been slowly working my way through one of the Inception kink meme posts, and fuck me, there's not a lot of kink there. Just reams of "fluffy kyoooot Arthur/Ariadne" and "Eames/Arthur where Arthur is a broken woobie and Eames has to fix him - ultra-schmoopy, plz" or "Arthur's a virgin and Eames introduces him to the wonders of buttsex and cocksucking". And when I read fic, it's just like you said: all the fics start sounding alike. The bases are the same, and they're so not drawing on the movie. Wtf? Is the fandom lazy or afraid of variety, or what? Just once, I'd like to see fic where Eames is the one getting fucked silly by Arthur.

Oooh, excellent point! Eames is all about masks, all about acting so many roles you just can't be sure which is him. That's why he's such a good forger - he knows HOW people look at others and WHAT they focus on, and takes that concept and runs with it. In a way, I suppose Eames succeeds in what I fail at (because I'm only human): he is, to a point, all things to all people.
And yes, Arthur's more about unconsciously hiding things, about keeping up a front that he doesn't really acknowledge.
All the possibilities we could write of, and people choose a cliche. What a surprise.
It's because it takes less effort. Because it's worn and easy and pleases people. Sort of like fast food: it's not well-made or good, but it's enough, and sometimes you just want something fast and convenient and don't care about the taste so much.

My suit kink snobbery seems to get worse over the years. ;) (I blame work. I've handled too many suits.) There's just something about men who can wear three-piece suits that makes me come over all funny.

And see, his attention to detail would make him a devastatingly good shag. You wouldn't even know your own name after he was done. He may not bend over for just anyone (or bend just anyone over, I bet he can be such a top), but that doesn't mean he's celibate/a virgin/asexual/nervous as a teenager.

Saito is made of win. I still can't get over how amazingly hot he looked wearing that nagajuban under what looked like a Western suit jacket at the beginning.

Oh, the movie definitely pushes Cobb/Saito (that scene in limbo! Holy shit, guys, get a room. ;) "We can be young men together"? Omfg.), which isn't a bad pairing at all. But the idea of Saito/Eames/Arthur sort of melts my brain a little. Okay, melts it a lot. (And somehow I can see Eames being the one getting pinned and taken - he's up against two ruthlessly methodical men, after all... that, and bottom!Eames is hot.)
