Dear ex owners of the lovely maine coon mix,
when the cat was brought in, he was literally covered with mats. So bad that the vet gave him a 'poodle cut' (where just the head, paws and tip of tail have fur) While this did get rid of the mats and other stuff clinging to his fur (one mat by his rear end was just a huge matting of fur, feces and 'other', bigger than most two month old kittens, I kid you not) He does now, look kinda funny. Although, I can tell he is much happier, more comfortable and I keep telling him his fur will grow back and he will be just as handsome as before.
Now, as I checked his paperwork, you took him in after his owner died. Until then, he had been an inside cat. Six months of being outside with a bit of food and a litter box turned him from probably near show cat quality to...horrid. (honestly, when you pick up a cat and his entire underside is just mats the size of a two year olds fist...) He was very nice and gently, considering he must have been in extreme pain from the pulling of the mats. He was, in fact, a 'gentle giant' even while being shaved. Oh...he did try to bite a couple of times, got the vet a good one with one of those huge paws of his...but even she said he was amazingly good.
I see you also have other pets, as you stated he was 'good with your other animals' Now, I don't know if you just didn't want this sweet boy at all, or just don't allow animals in your home. Really though...a quick check of google or just LOOKING at him would have told you that a cat with long soft fur MUST be brushed.
I suppose the rest of your animals are (I hope) taken care of, but after seeing the shape this sweet boy was in, well fed, yes, but horridly matted, I'm not so sure. He is ours now. I have put a note on his cage that he should be inside only, and brushed often. It is my hope we find someone who knows about maine coons and other long hairs, and will take care of him like the princely gentle giant he is.
IN hopes of karma giving you what you deserve
the tired cat lady who is taking care of this cat, and is giving him as much love as she can.
