you know, I have the extended breastfeeding thing figured out.

They all snort cocaine and then breastfeed, addicting the child to the drugs. This way they will breastfeed until they are 10 and the mom gets more internet crunchy points!

It is actually recommended (AAP) to breastfeed while smoking, although you're supposed to cut down as much as you can and not smoke around the baby. The idea is that breastfeeding is protective against a lot of the problems (specifically, SIDS and respiratory dificulty) caused by second-hand smoke, and that that outweighs the exposure to the chemicals through breastmilk. It's not optimal, though. I'd say it's a judgement call either way, but I'm a crazy breastfeeding mama.

Yup, if a mother smokes (cigarettes), it is better for her to breastfeed than formula-feed, because formula-feeding just multiplies the risks. Of course, it's BETTER to give up smoking, but comparing a non-smoking FFing mum to a smoking BFing one is kind of comparing apples and oranges.
