Dear America
Tonight we all saw President Obama address the Joint Session of Congress.It was inspiring,and while there are those who say "We'll never be able to do everything he says he wants to!" I find that if we don't try we won't get anything done at all.Doing everything may well not be possible yet the problems he outlined and the ideas he put forward are the things which truly do need to be fixed immediately and he does need to try and do it all at once.Each problem affects the other and this nation cannot afford to wait to do each one at a time.
This is not to say we should follow this man blindly,call him out at all times when you feel the need.Gods only know that we haven't had a president who seems so willing to listen to average Americans and be honest and up front in quite some time, so use the chance as he may not be this way forever.Your voice is now useful,the previous 8 years had been full of a government so closed off to the people we felt cut off and helpless.They failed us in every aspect and we had given up the right to stop them.We cowered away and allowed our protestors to be corralled into "Free Speech Zones" where their message was not heard by those in government.They refused to take us seriously and unfortunately we gave them no reason to.Now we have a man who has given America hope and who is willing to listen and restore the powers we allowed to be stolen from us after September 11th.This is a rare deed,those in power rarely give any back and we must never allow this power to be taken again.Use your voice America and tell your Senators,your Representatives,your Governors, and yes your President what you really think, what ideas you have.Work to rebuild our confidence as citizens and remember that we are all that stands between democracy and the return of tyrants and fascists.
Your Government my dear America can be a helpful institution but you shouldn't rely on it alone.We need to go out on the streets ourselves,as our president has asked, and volunteer in our own neighborhoods.Too long have we waited for someone to come along and fix the problems that we already see the solution too.We complain about litter but how often do you go out and pick it up yourself?Sidewalks that haven't been shoveled?Get out there and clear them yourself,fix up a public park if it looks like it needs the help.Go to your town hall and see what you can do.Hell,go to a neighbor and see if they need help.The fact is,if we do end up getting as bad as the Great Depression we need to have the sense of community that our generation simply hasn't grown up with. We need people to work together and feel like they can make a difference.If you have an idea to improve your town,your county,your state then bring it up!Talk to your mayors and councilors,your senators and your representatives.The initiative needs to be taken by us to fix this land instead of allowing the government to become the only option we have.
