Staying on track with the cherry trees blossoming and students around me tossing frisbees and flying kites is not that easy. I want to goof off too, but in another month I should be a graduate of this college so I need to plow ahead.
Last week was our "centennial" week, 100 years of existence for our college. I think the most interesting thing about it was that Blake Mycoskie of TOMS shoes spoke. He lives on a sailboat and was promoting the idea of having a "selfless passion" in life. And the students need to do this now, when they are young and before being settled down and with kids. I think back and maybe we "should" have joined the Peace Corps. But I spent 30 years in a part of Applachia, the family scraping by on a teacher's salary, so how is that so different? We MADE our contribution to society -- at least my husband did. Now it is my turn to do something "with passion," like teach freshman English, get published, help the environment -- all three!
Two sons talked to us Easter weekend by phone, so somebody was thinking of me. A church member was nice, in that he moved 2 chairs in the back. We arrived late for Easter mass and were put behind a huge beam and couldn't see the priest, but this Knights of Columbus member moved our chairs where we could see, then he allowed us to "bring up the gifts" to the priest too! I had on a light purple blazer and pants and white shirt, and husband Fran had on a white shirt and black pants. He thought we "matched" up there!
And I was glad I finally talked to the lady who sent me a 'welcome to the church' card. We discussed social groups (or the lack thereof in this huge church), the lady who has cancer, and if I wanted, joining the Thursday morning group for me to interact with some other women. If I can get to know a few women that will make me happy. And if I can get some writing assignments, finish my book and get it published and lose weight, I'll be even happier!
