what a tease.
http://bodyodd.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/04/23/11359120-why-some-cant-tell-left-from-right?lite the article promises an answer to the question of my persistent left-right confusion but instead offers... nothing. i won't say that i'm surprised, since media teases are not the newest concept ever, so i will instead say that i'm disappointed. it would be nice to inform my dance students that there's a perfectly good *Scientific* reason why i keep saying 'right' and cueing 'left', but alas. they'll just have to go on thinking i'm probably dyslexic. (and, who knows? i might be. but no one's ever suggested the possibility and i'm not about to self-diagnose.)
for my part (and because this is america, gosh-darn it), i blame my parents. they spent some portion of my childhood trying to convert me from left to right-handed. the process wasn't too draconian--i mostly recall them encouraging me to write with my right hand and then saying that the resulting chicken scratches looked better than my regular writing, or refusing to take items i offered them unless i offered with my right hand--but it didn't take and eventually they gave up. but the scars live on to this day! (faint faint chicken scratches on my psyche.)
