someone said 'go get the butter'
someone else added 'and the fingernail scissors?'
and a third someone mentioned that these lines were references to something.
so i went and looked it up. came across some illuminating video clips, and this conversation.
http://www.slantmagazine.com/house/2011/03/the-conversations-last-tango-in-paris/ so now i've learned that 'the last tango in paris' is not the sepia-tinged romance i'd somehow imagined it was. and i'm prompted to consider marlon brando as something other than a walking punchline or a bloated mess. maybe i need to see 'a streetcar named desire' [or 'on the waterfront'*] to get a better idea of how the young marlon brando was perceived and why anyone would think of him for this role. in the meantime, 'the last tango in paris' has just moved up [well, honestly, onto] my list.

* and 'apocalypse now' might be interesting to see just for comparison's sake, to see how much similarity exists between brando's characterizations in the bertolucci and coppola films.
