character name: Sophia
Fandom: Claymore
Timeline: post-death, Chapter 24
character's age: Exact age unknown. Appears to be a young woman in her early twenties.

powers, skills, pets and equipment:

Standard Claymore powers apply - the ability to sense yoki and superhuman in terms of speed, durability, reflexes, and strength. Extreme temperatures don't bother Claymores the way they would an average human and they need ridiculously little food, water, and sleep. As an offensive type, Sophia wouldn't be quite as good at regeneration as a defensive type. Reattaching a limb wouldn't be a problem, but growing a completely new one might be. There's also her own personal claymore blade, of course.

Though she may not look it, Sophia excels at brute strength. She's ranked A+ in the Databook in this area, more than enough to earn her the nickname "Muscular Sophia" and get her compared to a gorilla by Noel. On the other hand, she's not as agile as most Claymores. Her moves in battle seem to be largely "hack and slash" attacks, basic moves where she just chops through things. Her baseline strength alone is enough to enable her to cut through solid stone without breaking a sweat.

As a Claymore who rose as high as the Number 3 ranking, she's certainly no lightweight...no pun intended.

canon history:

Sophia killed seven yoma.

Her life before that is unknown, though it's reasonable to assume she was a young girl whose family was killed by yoma and was then scooped up by the Organization. (That's the usual formula.) After becoming a Claymore, she used her brute strength to rise through the ranks to grab the No. 3 spot. Her position there was both hotly contested (Noel claimed that she was No. 3) and temporary, as Priscilla's promotion demoted everyone below Teresa down a notch. But her skills were still enough to earn her a nickname - Muscular Sophia.

But we do know that in a town turned yoma nest, Sophia claims to have killed seven out of thirteen, one more than Noel. This debate was second only to which one really held the Number 3 ranking within the Organization. As it turned out, they were both wrong.

Sophia is informed by Irene that the three of them, along with a newly promoted Number 2 by the name of Priscilla, had been given orders to kill the Number 1 ranked Teresa for killing humans and ultimately turning her blade against the Organization. After being amazed by Priscilla's yoma chopping skills, the four of them set out on their hunt.

After finding her, Sophia pays the innkeeper and proceeds to start ventilating his ceiling with her sword, hoping to do the same to Teresa on the floor above. The plan was really to smoke Teresa out so that Priscilla could finish her from behind, but the younger Claymore decides on her own that this is a cowardly course of action. Sophia watches the ensuing battle between Priscilla and Teresa with interest, but does eventually intervene. This earns her a slice to the shoulder and chest, a fairly minor wound as far as Claymores go, and apparently something she prefers to the disgrace of being kicked.

The execution squad releases enough of their yoki to change their faces (30%), and rush Teresa yet again. This time Sophia is brought to her knees, though she's not the only one. When Teresa escapes, Priscilla snaps. The team is forced to get to their feet and go after her. By the time they catch up, it is essentially too late. Priscilla is past the point of returning to a human. All they can do is watch as she fully awakens and takes Teresa's head.

When she starts talking about eating guts and relieves Irene of the burden of one of her arms, Sophia and Noel know that Priscilla must be taken down as well. They attack together and manage to cut off one of her arms in return, but are quickly skewered by their former comrade.

personality:

Sophia is shown as something of a contradiction. She's a Sherman tank with pouty lips and half-lidded eyes. She can be polite or politely condescending, though she does at least seem to have some genuine respect for those who've earned it. If not for her interactions with Noel, she would seem the perfect lady. It's hard to tell if the two are actually on friendly terms or share a mutual disdain, but both are obviously getting something out of the rivalry.

Sophia seems to be fairly intelligent as well, evidenced by her choice of words and general demeanor. (And for what it's worth, her name comes from the Greek word for wisdom.) She tends to be on the sultry, soft-spoken side and disapproves when the battle between Teresa and Priscilla gets too loud. She was also very observant during said fight, but in all fairness, it was something to see.

Sophia is competitive, though Noel seems the master at bringing this side of her out. She's more than willing to accept the other's challenge for Number 3 before Irene shows up and puts an end to it. She's also confident, commenting on how any one of them could've taken out the yoma nest alone before finding out what their real mission was. As a Claymore, Sophia is the type that fights and kills yoma with a smile on her lips. At the very least, no one can accuse her of having bad manners.
