hold the phone

I ran out of recced Teen Wolf stories to read, so I've taken a temporary detour into Sherlock fic, and I'm in the middle of one (this one) and mention is made of forks being held differently in "America" than in England. Is this true? The story seems to suggest that in England, everyone holds their fork in their left hand. Now, it's true that most people I know (in Canada) hold their forks in their right hand, but most people I know are right-handed. I hold my fork in my left hand, because I'm left-handed. I wield my knife with my right hand, because I'm ambidextrous enough to do so, but I think most people I know do something like switch their fork to their left hand while they use the knife, and then switch back for eating (I'm not sure of that).

TL;DR - Beloved Brits, do you all hold your forks in your left hand? What about spoons? Knives? How about all of you other non-Americans? I had no idea this was some sort of cultural thing. Like the three fingers in Inglourious Basterds!
