Every night, I tell myself a story when I go to bed. Does everyone do that? Like, I can't think about actual things when I go to bed, or I will never get to sleep, so I think about a happy story instead. I suggested this technique to my Dad last year when he was having trouble sleeping, but he told himself a story about war and monsters and ( Read more... )

I tell myself stories every night, too! Mine are always Mary Sues, though. :X

Yay! Sometimes I tell myself thinly-veiled Mary Sue stories. When I was (much) younger I used to just straight up tell myself stories about how it would be when I married Joe McIntyre/River Phoenix/whichever Corey I preferred that day, but then I had to stop because I got sad that they would never come true, ahahahahaSOB.

Of course I tell myself stories at night! The only trouble is, sometimes they get a bit too enthralling, and I can't get to sleep.

I have that problem sometimes, too. Or I'll get hung up on some small detail, and be unable to rest until I have worked it out. It is not a perfect system, but much better than trying to go to sleep while thinking about bills or clients or inventing arguments you might have with someone you have never met who may have looked at you funny on the bus (or may not have been looking at you at all), which is what I tend to do if there is no story.

I almost always tell myself a fanfiction story, and usually what I'm doing is thinking through a story I want to write (but never will).

Yep. Me too.

I'm always surprised when people say they don't tell themselves stories. It's such a great way to go to sleep, or spend time when you're sitting waiting somewhere boring.

Yes! For some reason, I thought everybody did this, though of course it makes sense that they wouldn't.
