So, Project Keeping Track of 2011: Books Edition. I started out the year reading books from the collection at my grandparents' house, which were not books I would have picked under other circumstances. They have a lot of murder mysteries, Louis L'Amour books, self-help books, and Reader's Digest condensed books. I stuck to the murder mysteries, ( Read more... )

I love To Say Nothing of the Dog. Be careful with Connie Willis, though; she writes some awfully depressing stuff. Bellwether is the other one of hers I really liked; it's got a similar sweetness about it. And no one dies. Unlike, say, the one set during the Black Death.

Oooh, that is helpful information, thank you! I really liked the sweetness of it, and going in expecting that and getting the plague instead might be a bummer. :P I will keep an eye out for Bellwether, though!

The only time I read a book is at lunch at work. I usually have 15 mins to do so (the other 15 is spent with my coworkers - they go out for a smoke). So, it'll take me quite a while to finish a book. I feel like I've been reading my current one (a Harlan Coben thriller) for over a month! Heh.

That's pretty much the only time I read books, too. If I bring my lunch, I can get 30-45 minutes of reading in, which is okay, but I mostly don't bring my lunch, which usually means zero minutes of reading. So that is just one more reason I should get better about bringing my lunch. :D

I've always adored To Say Nothing of the Dog; it's fun and riffs off a classic Victorian memoir - Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog), which I also recommend.

Willis' recent WWII books (Blackout and All Clear) are also time travel, but while they contain lots of amusing bits are often darker/bleaker. I still recommend them, but make sure you have both on hand, because it's basically one very long story split into two volumes, and you'll want to keep reading when you hit the end of the first

It was so cute, I really loved it. I will keep an eye out for other books by her, but I will also keep in mind that they might not be so lighthearted. Books!
