i observed my reference librarian teach a class today, it was an english for speakers of other languages class and the poor dude had to explain the concept of the heroic journey so these folks could go home and write about tom hanks in castaway - i KNOW, really bad assignment, right? so he's like, "easy, we've all seen star wars." and everyone gave him blank stares. then i sang out "lord of the riiiiings!" (as i am wont to do)... more blank stares. "the matrix?" no. the odyssey? buddha? no.
