picspam: if the spirit moves you

"I think what I'd want to tell people, if they don't know us, is to not believe everything they've heard. I think a lot of people have me pegged as a Janis Joplin wannabe, or the diva of the jam band scene or whatever. But, I think there's a lot more to it than that. I don't even listen to Janis Joplin, so I don't know why that reference keeps popping up. You can't be confined to a two-sentence paraphrase in Rolling Stone."

CD RELEASE SHOW 2010

"They all have that beat to them, a physicality and a mood. You have to either want to dance to it or cry to it. But there's also a feistiness to these songs that's completely unapologetic."

ROCK'N'ROLL GODDESS
ft. the Flying V & the Hammond B3

"A show needs to feel like something that doesn’t stop. A lull might happen before a song and it might sound like we’re taking a break, but really, if you listen closely, there’s a drone on the organ and I’m building up an intro into the next song. So it’s a journey. I like to write the set like it’s a movie, same as a song. It has to have a beginning, middle, and end."

"I want to be James Brown. For some reason my voice keeps naturally going in the that soul direction, so I might as well not fight it."

"I was always a musician, let’s start with that. My mom said that I was singing before I was talking. Apparently, I would make up fake words when I was about one. It was a long time coming..."

"So if the spirit moves you, that's just fine with me."

SEX MACHINE

Pictures do not do this woman's sex appeal justice. See her live onstage, three feet away, eyes shut and swaying, hands slapping a tambourine, and then you'll understand. She makes love to her music.

"I wanted to be a woman from day one. "Paris" might have been the first time I actually realized it in a song. I think people thought I was this earth mother type, but if you look at video footage of me dancing to Paula Abdul when I was ten, you’ll know what was going on."

"Ugh, I feel like Iggy Pop up here except I don't have my shirt off yet. You know, I got to lick him on the chest one time. He is one of the sexiest people in person that I've ever seen. Iggy Pop's like a warm piece of melted chocolate. That's what this song is all about, ladies and gentlemen- Iggy Pop."

BAD ASS

One time, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals played a 2 a.m. Top Gun themed show at Higher Ground and really awesome stuff happened. Mostly because they were dressed like this:

Example of the awesome:

& THE NOCTURNALS
ft. Scott Tournet, Matt Burr, Catherine Popper & Benny Yurco

Grace: I'mma put my shoes back on now. [cheers & boos] That was exactly as mixed a response as the Yankees and the Red Sox. Some people love the shoes, some people hate them- I don't care what you think, I'm putting them on, 'cause they make my butt look like candy. See? Better, right?

Cat: Take your top off!

Grace: This is a- this is a onesie, Cat. It has no top.

"It's funny when people come up to me and say, "Wow, you're an overnight success!" It makes me want to say, "Have you been asleep for five fucking years?" But I don't. To me, we've been succeeding on a small level since the very beginning and that's good enough for me."

"This record is the first time it's really been us -- the first time we've all found each other and ourselves. Everybody was totally comfortable, everything was totally comfortable, everything we had was sitting right in front of us, and it just poured out of us.
