Summary: A summoning ritual gone wrong.
~*~
"Well hello ... Death?"
Lucifer's voice trailed off in confusion. He should have been welcoming the Angel of Death, the Rider of the Pale Horse. Instead he was confronted by a young woman dressed all in black, with an umbrella in her hands and an ankh suspended on a necklace.
And in contrast to Lucifer's confusion, she seemed amused.
"Hello yourself, Lucifer," she answered. "It's been awhile."
Lucifer stared, and she smiled easily. "I believe you summoned me?" She moved closer to him, stepping carefully in the loose dirt of the mass grave. "I have to say though, you've gone a bit overboard if you wanted to talk to me. The ritual sacrifice really wasn't necessary. You could have just called me."
"Called you," Lucifer repeated. Something was very wrong here. The summoning ritual had gone smoothly, in spite of the attempted interference from the Winchesters. He'd done everything to the letter, he was sure of it, but instead of Death he'd apparently summoned some unknown entity. She definitely wasn't mortal. There was a sense of ancient power from her, like nothing he'd felt before, in Heaven, on Earth, or in Hell.
She stopped next to him and looked up. "I know we haven't talked often, but you have to know I would always make time to see you. Especially since the last I'd heard, you'd gone traveling into the great beyond."
Lucifer's confusion was fading, replaced by smoldering anger. The last thing he needed right now was some minor deity interfering with his plans. "I don't know who you are or what you're playing at, but I don't have time for this."
Infuriatingly, all she did was smile. "New face, same old attitude."
Lucifer abruptly lost his temper. "Enough." He gestured at her, bringing his power to bear to throw her out of his way and into the trees surrounding the field.
To his shock, the only result was to make her frown at him.
"That was rude, even for you," she said, looking at him intently. She must have seen something, because she suddenly glanced around, then closed her eyes for a moment. "Oh, I see."
"See what?" Lucifer demanded.
She opened her eyes and gave him a slight smile and a shrug. "I think you've got the wrong number." She must have seen the incomprehension on his face, because she tried again. "This isn't the personification you're looking for?"
When he didn't respond except to glare harder, she sighed. "Pop culture references are wasted. Got it. I'll skip to the punch line." Her demeanor changed, becoming more serious. "You were summoning Death, and you got me, but this isn't my usual territory. Somehow the signals got crossed, and your summoning went to me instead of your intended recipient."
This was making less and less sense by the minute. "You're Death," he said, with obvious skepticism.
"Yep," she agreed cheerfully, smiling again. "Death of the Endless, at your service." She paused and the smile vanished as quickly as it had appeared. "Except the 'at your service' part is just an expression, because whatever you've got planned doesn't look like anything I'd be interested in, even if I had jurisdiction."
Lucifer regarded her for a long moment. It seemed ridiculous that this girl could be an incarnation of death, but whatever she was, she was old and powerful, and his attack on her hadn't affected her in the slightest. It was possible that if he expended his full resources he could best her, but his make-shift vessel would most likely be destroyed. That would put a serious crimp in his plans, since his proper vessel was still playing annoyingly hard to get.
Deciding that in this case discretion might be advisable, he gave her a perfunctory bow. It probably looked ridiculous in his current vessel, but a little respect never hurt when dealing with unknown powers. Even so, he didn't bother to hide his sarcasm. "In that case, please, don't let me keep you." The sooner she left, the sooner he could see if any part of this mess was salvageable.
She didn't move for a minute, still watching him closely, then she shrugged again. "I'm tempted to stick around and watch, but like I said, not my territory." She took a step back and gave him another infuriating smile. "See you around, Lucifer. Behave yourself!"
And then she vanished.
