Challenge: none
Prompt: going home
Characters: Dante
It wasn't unusual for Lady to find Dante asleep on the couch in his office. What was unusual this time was the way he woke up after she yelled his name (having learned the hard way that shaking Dante awake was a Bad Idea). He'd blinked at her for a second, then practically jumped off the couch. The look on his face was a mixture of surprise and confusion, and he looked around the office like he'd never seen it before.
"Something wrong?" she asked.
Dante looked at her for a long moment, then rubbed the back of his neck as he glanced around the room again. "Nah. Just a weird dream." He still looked a little confused. "Make that a really weird dream."
Lady settled herself on a corner of his desk. "Well if you're done with your nap, I've got a job you might be interested in."
The confused look lingered for another moment before Dante finally shook his head and turned his attention to her. "What's up?"
After that it was mostly business as usual. There was one odd moment when he pulled out his keys and stopped dead in his tracks. Lady managed to stop herself in time to keep from running into him, and when she stepped around him she saw him looking at
one particular key. It was an odd shape, almost like an old skeleton key.
"What's that open?"
He didn't answer for a moment. Then he shrugged and started walking again. "Something I don't have any more."
"So you just carry it around for, what, sentimental reasons?"
"Something like that," Dante answered, then changed the subject.
Once they tracked down the nest of demons, Dante threw himself into the fight with even more violence than he usually did. Before Lady could even pick a target, Dante took on the whole group by himself. She ended up just staying out of his way and watching for stragglers. She hadn't really even needed to draw her guns. Easiest money she'd ever made.

Dante had never been what anyone would call 'normal', but Lady couldn't help noticing that he was behaving oddly, even for him. He'd called her up one night and asked if she knew anything about a city named Fortuna. Other than a general idea of its location, she didn't know much.
"Planning a vacation?" she asked.
"Not exactly," he answered. "There's just something I gotta check out."
He came back a week later. Her questions about his trip got vague answers and a quick change of subject.

Obviously there was something going on, but Lady couldn't figure out what.
Two weeks ago Dante had asked her how much it would cost to visit Japan. He seemed to give up on that idea when he figured out how expensive it would be, and when he realized that he'd have to somehow come up with the right documentation to get a passport. He seemed genuinely disappointed though, which was odd because he'd never mentioned anything about visiting other countries before. In fact, before his sudden trip to Fortuna, she wasn't sure he'd ever even been out of the city.
One week ago she'd walked into his office and found him watching 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' on a battered portable television. She hadn't even known he owned a TV. He'd shrugged off her teasing, saying he was bored and the TV only picked up one channel.
Which didn't explain how he was watching some British show about a time traveler on a different station a few days later.

After a month of his odd behavior, Lady decided she'd had enough. The last straw was his random comment after an argument about whose turn it was to pay for the pizza delivery. She could have sworn she'd heard him mutter "This was much easier when it grew on a tree."
Once they'd settled that Dante was paying (of course), she confronted him. "What's up with you lately?"
"What do you mean what's up with me?"
"You've been acting weird for the last few weeks."
"No idea what you're talking about."
Lady just stared at him and waited him out. Eventually he caved, although she wasn't sure if it was because he decided he really did want to talk about it, or because she was blocking his way to the pizza and he knew he wasn't getting it until he talked.
"You ever had a dream that seemed so real you have a hard time remembering it didn't actually happen?" Lady nodded, and Dante sighed before continuing. "It's kind of like that."
She gave him a skeptical look. "So you're freaked out over a dream?"
"I'm not freaked out!" Dante protested, then sighed. "It's just...really weird." He picked up the nearest bottle of alcohol and slumped in his chair. "So, it started when I woke up on an island..."
