the owls are not what they seem

I've been watching Twin Peaks. Three or four episodes into season 2 so far. Strangest. Show. Ever. I don't think I've seen any David Lynch films, so this might be why I didn't realize the extent of the oddness I would be seeing. So weird. I'm not even sure how to explain it. It's like the acting will be deliberately off or odd in certain scenes, but in a way that's clearly stylistic? And then when a guy says "shall I compare thee to a summer's day" to a woman, he doesn't just say the first few lines, but starts going through the entire sonnet. And the log lady! She holds a log. Ands says completely bizarre things in this very flat way. And the way everyone feels that Special Agent Dale Cooper is the best FBI agent ever, when he's obsessed with pie and treats his dreams as important leads that must be thoroughly investigated. (No one objects to this.) But then other things will be treated with the appropriate weight, so it's like. WHAT AM I WATCHING?

Obviously I'm enjoying it quite a bit. I especially like Audrey Horne, teenage femme fatale. Her hobbies include slinky sway-dancing to smooth jazz, messing up her father's business, investigating murders, and saying stuff just to screw with your head. She draws you in with her slight brokenness, and then turns the tables. (She fits into one of my character types, like human!Darla and Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman/Selina Kyle.) Also Nadine, who has an eyepatch and an obsession with creating silent drape runners. (It seems like a pretty good idea to me!)

The cinematography is pretty neat as well. David Lynch is fond of shots of empty spaces as a way of conveying tone. It's interesting.

The fanfic flamingo might be the most accurate of those memes where animals explain how things work. See what I mean? How often has this or this happened to me? Too often.
