Art, music, and public vomiting

Don't let the "public vomiting" in the subject title fool you. Aside from a couple of incidents (which I'll get to) I had an awesome weekend, and of course, I feel the need to chronicle it on this here "blog" (it's what I do best).

Saturday, my friend Lina and I went to Granville Island to check out the Undergraduate Art Exhibition at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. I went to the graduate show this time last year and was impressed with some of the pieces I saw then, but wow... this year they had some pretty amazing stuff. There was this one of a ceramic piggy bank broken with money and ceramic guts protruding out. It was cute, in a sadistic way. Another piece that really impressed me was this wax figure of an Asian dude dressed up as a sort of homeless Superman, grinning like an idiot. It looked so real from a distance that Lina and I were wondering if it was really a guy dressed up as a living statue.

It's hard to explain with words... they're really something you need to see.
The animation section was pretty cool. Some were cute, some funny and still some were just outright bizarre. I came across this dude's work and was completely blown away:

An extremely talented guy... The exhibit closed before I could watch his animation :S A shame because the trailer looks so fucking awesome. (Check it out!)
If I could steal someone's talent... it would be his.

After a delicious meal of ramen (Lina's first time - *shock*), we proceeded down to the Commodore for the Peter Bjorn and John concert.

Public vomiting story #1:
We hopped on a fairly crowded bus filled with 12-13 year old Asian kids who looked like they were partying at the beach earlier. Not long after getting onto the bus, one girl lost it and threw up all over the floor. Of course, all the kids started screaming in disgust, and everyone else on the bus were disgusted too. Anyways, traffic was really busy and more people kept getting onto the bus, which made it really hard for many to avoid stepping in the girl's mess...
It was a bad scene. We got off on an earlier stop and I told the driver what happened (surprised that didn't happen earlier).

Anyways...
The concert was amazing! Fujiya & Miyagi opened for PB&J and they were outstanding! I so rarely see opening bands work the crowd so well. After they finished, the crowd clamored for more. It didn't happen, but still - wow - so good :D

Finally, Peter Bjorn and John came on.
Wow.
Seriously, wow.
I mean, from the sound of their album, I never would've suspected them to rock as hard as they did. Even for their song "Young Folks", they were nuts. Jumping around, getting on their knees and playing on top of the speakers. They played different variations of a couple of songs like "The Chills" (which I never thought of as a standout on their album - but live, holy fuck it's awesome). They even sang happy birthday in Swedish!
It was a pretty great concert, and I'm really happy I went. I was considering not because I didn't know who else was going to it, but thank god for Lina.
Yay for concert buddies!

We finished off the night with some delicious poutine from Fritz.
Mmm...

Public vomiting story #2:
On the bus back home, I happened to sit near the back and there was this Asian dude passed out on the back seat. He was half sitting, half lying down.
I noticed there was a puddle around his feet, and I realized... obviously... he had thrown up.

Others, including the bus driver, knew he was passed out. Some tried to wake him up to figure out where he was going because apparently he just got onto the bus, perhaps at random. It was the last bus of the night (around 2:00 am) so he would've been screwed if he found himself in Kerrisdale (unless that's where he intended to go).

Anyways, as we were crossing the bridge, he started to throw up again. Not violently. Rather passively. And in spurts. Into his hoodie.
There came a point where the bus lurched forward, and as that happened, the dude fell on the ground and ended up in the kneeling position. Kneeling in his own mess, no less.

Other passengers tried to wake him up to no avail. The bus driver called ahead to Transit Security to come pick him up. They met up with the bus just after the bridge. After trying for several minutes, they eventually manage to get the guy up on his feet, who then proceeded to throw up on one of the security guys. Some guys pulled out their camera and filmed the entire thing.
The security guys got the dude off the bus and put up 'caution tape' around the affected area, and we were off.

Again... it was a bad scene.
Strange that it happened twice in one night for me.
Ah well. Kids will be kids.

The next day wasn't as eventful, but I did stuff myself full of sushi from The Eatery.
Mmm... fusion sushi.

I went to the El-P concert last night (which was brilliant) and didn't get home until very late so I guess I'll stop here...
I'd write more, but I think I've written too much. If you made it to this point, kudos to you.

Kudos.
