Let me introduce you to my cat.

Her name is Laney. She is over 2 and a half years old. We have had her since she was a kitten. Corinna and I do not have kids, so she has been like a child to us. She is a mix of her two siblings. She is mostly grey, with splotches of a tan/orange color. One of her front legs is striped, just like her sibling. She has a white mark under one of her eyes that looks like a tear.

We picked her up at a pet store in the mall. They had three kittens. One was grey, one was orange and white striped, and the other was a mix between the two and a lot cuter. She wasn't moving around much. She had received her shots that day. We asked to hold her, and Corinna fell in love immediately. We paid for her, and then brought her home the next day. I didn't think I would be too crazy about her, but I quickly fell in love with her. Instead of being Corinna's kitten, she became ours.

Now, I was never really very fond of cats. Most of the cats I had known were these boring lumps of fat and fur who only cared about eating and sleeping. I liked a few, like my dads cat Smudge, but for the most part, I found them to be completely inferior to other popular pets, like the African Praying Mantis. Laney changed that, and I now think of cats to be as good a pet as a dog.

She generally hates all other people except for us. Most people that meet her are greeted with hissing and get introduced to her claws. She is very vocal, curious, and playful. She hates being separated from us, like when one of us is behind a closed door. I would say she is very attached to us. I will sometimes wake up in the morning and feel a warm ball of fur between my feet. Whenever she does something she is not supposed to do, she watches us very carefully to see if we notice. One of her favorite things is to sit near open windows, or go out on the patio/balcony. She loves cream cheese.

She also likes anything stringy, like, ribbons. The other night, I saw her playing with some ribbon. I cut if off the spool for her, and dangled it in front of her. She had a ball. I would do this whenever I could. She didn't like playing with it too much on her own.

On Sunday morning, as Corinna and I were sitting down to eat(we were eating in front of the TV), I saw the ribbon and tossed it in front of the TV. Laney was sitting on top of it, and she got excited the moment she saw it. So, we were eating, and Laney was off to the side doing her thing with the ribbon. After a little while, I looked over at her, and I freaked out.

She was eating the ribbon.

We instantly pulled it away from her, and we were able to get about a foot of it out of her mouth. We tried to pull out the rest, but she swallowed it. She must have eaten around 4 feet. I called an emergency vet, and they said to give her 2 teaspoon sized doses of Hydrogen Peroxide to get her to throw up. She did not throw up, so we took her down there. They could not get her to throw up either, and by then, it had been a few hours. We had to pay them $200 for that, and they gave us a quote of $960 - $1550 for surgery. We had to take Laney home, since we did not have that kind of money.

I will not get into details here, but the money did present itself, and we took Laney in for surgery on Sunday afternoon.

They didn't get to operate until around midnight. A cat came in with a ruptured bladder, and it was more critical. The surgery took 80 minutes. They pulled over 2 feet of ribbon from her stomach. They found more in her, but they could not get it out and said she should pass it on her own. We spent $960. Laney is worth it.

We picked her up at 8. They handed her to us in her carrier. They described her as "precious Laney", since she is not very nice(that's my kitty!). Laney was growling, but stopped as soon as we were in the car. We had to take her to our regular vet, so that they could administer fluids. We filled out the paperwork, and left her there. We warned them about her temper of course.

I went there at 5pm to pick her up. They had to call the emergency vet(EVS) because her temperature was still high and she had not used the litter box at all. EVS wanted to see her again, which I was not happy about. I left Laney at the day vet all day, had them administer fluids and antibiotics, and they only charged me $22!! I told them how much I had spent on the surgery, and they flipped out. They suggested that I ask them to show me how to do the fluids, since I felt that she would be better off at home. They handed her to me, and of course, there was a deep growl coming from the carrier. I looked in at her, and the growling stopped. I called Corinna to let her know that I had to go back to EVS, and that I was going to have them tell me what to do.

When I got there, she started growling, and we pulled the carrier apart to get her out. Well, she had finally urinated, and they cleaned the carrier and gave me a fresh towel. Our towel got bleached in the process. I will wash it tonight.

They had me pet her forehead while they took her temp, which was still high, and they did a few other things. She would stop growling when they left the room, and once even stood up a bit to look around. We put her back in the carrier, and I brought her home.

Her mood changed instantly. She got very active in the carrier, and I opened it up, and she walked into the bedroom. She stayed there for a few hours, but did get up to use the litter box a few times through the night.

This morning, she actually walked around a bit. She had no interest in food or water though. She sat in front of the patio door for awhile. When I left, she was sitting near the bed.

So far, Corinna has gotten her to eat a little tuna, and Corinna got a meow when she saw her. She had to give her some water in a dropper, but I am hopeful that she will pull through this. She is strong. I will be getting some Gerber baby food later on, since the vet said that might interest her in eating. I should try cream cheese too.

Laney is worth all this hardship. I can't wait to see her when I get home tonight.
