Chapter Title: 02. It's gonna be Spring!
It's almost the end of the semester in the next few weeks to come. Everyone is excited. They'll be in high school the next time school starts. Of course, final exams are just around the corner so the students are also busy with their studies.
Maeko was on cleaning duty that day. She was wiping the windows clean when she heard a loud noise from behind her. She quickly turned around and saw the same group of girls who were chasing her a few months ago; that same day she met Tsubasa.
The leader of the group walked towards her, arms crossed and smirking. "Oh look, Maeko's being a good girl and cleaning the room."
Maeko just stood there with the rag in her hands. She stuttered for words and managed to reply, "B-But, you're on cleaning duty too, Kyoko. You should be helping out."
The moment she said this, the girl's hand was already clutching her hair and pulling her out of the room. "Let me go!" Maeko cried out. She could hear the girls laughing behind them. She felt herself being thrown inside the Girls' bathroom a few moments later.
Maeko scrambled to the side, away from Kyoko's group. "And since when were you allowed to talk back?" One of the girls asked. "And you should show some respect. Don't just call Kyoko by her first name!" Another added.
"There, there girls. We'll teach this brat how to treat us properly." A girl from the group walked towards Maeko with a bucket full of water. Without hesitations, she threw the water at her and started laughing. The other girls began filling the other buckets with water and splashing Maeko one after another. All Maeko could do was cry. From the corner of her eyes, she could see Kyoko enjoying the scene in front of her.
The school never did anything for her. Kyoko belonged to a wealthy family. She could bribe anyone with money. Maeko didn't even bother to report the incident at the principal.
Maeko walked home that afternoon in her wet uniform. People were staring at her, wondering why a middle schooler like her would walk around in her school uniform soaked in water. The wind was starting to become chilly and Maeko was already freezing.
Tears started falling from her eyes when a familiar voice called to her. "Maeko?"
Looking at that person, she saw Tsubasa running towards her. For some reason, she felt glad that he was there. "What happened to you?" He asked, obviously worried. Maeko looked away. "I...just fell into the river." Tsubasa clearly didn't believe her. He was frowning.
"T-This is nothing..." Maeko tried to shun the topic away and Tsubasa just sighed. He took off his coat and wrapped it around her. "I'll take you home."
Maeko didn't take the offer at first but Tsubasa kept insisting that she eventually gave in. She lived in an apartment unit with her younger brother. Their parents have their own company back at their hometown in Ishikawa. The reason why she and her brother were at Tokyo were mainly because their parents didn't have time to take care of them. Maeko and her brother were both sent to public schools and will only be able to enter private schools in high school. Her mother used to say, it's to save money. She hated it. Her life is pretty messed up.
"Naoto, I'm home." She called out as she opened the door. Tsubasa followed quietly behind her. The two of them headed for the living room.
A young boy emerged from the kitchen and greeted, "Welcome ho--who's that?" Maeko just smiled and said, "He's a friend of mine. He's Tsubasa." The boy smiled and bowed. Tsubasa did the same. "I'm Naoto, by the way."
It seemed like Naoto heard about Tsubasa from his sister when he saved her from Kyoko's group. And this time, he was sure Kyoko did this to his sister. "Naoto.." Maeko just didn't want to talk about it.
Naoto is going to be in his first year in middle school in Spring.
The afternoon just flew by and so did the days. Before everyone knew it, it was already the end of their middle school year. Vacation passed and the new school year comes to a start.
Maeko was enrolled at Seiou Private High School. Unfortunately for her, Kyoko was also there and she had a new group to lead. The entrance ceremonies ended peacefully for her and homeroom started. They were all asked to introduce themselves.
After her turn, Maeko just glued her eyes on her desk, afraid that Kyoko was looking at her direction. Just then, one name took her by surprise, making her look in front.
"Hello, my name is Shimizu Tsubasa."
Then, he looked at her and smiled.
It definitely was Spring.
