i'm falling off the face of the earth

So Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast the other day and things are a mess! New Orleans is under water, there are bodies floating in the streets, and people are committing organized lootings of stores in these areas. Someone even killed a policeman.
I've seen some pictures and it's hard to believe that the devastation was so massive. Some gas companies have oil rigs in the Gulf Coast that are now destroyed and that has affected the entire USA.
Today I got a call urging me to run to the nearest gas station and fill up before 6:00 pm because prices were expected to jump by at least $0.50 after 6:00. I went, and thought it kind of scary that in the morning when I drove by the same gas station the price was $2.67, but in the afternoon when I filled up it had already jumped to $2.87.
At Folly Beach some of the gas stations had already reached $3.01 a gallon.
I talked to my brother in Charlotte and he said the pumps shut down right after he filled up. One of my mom's friends was pumping and the prices were jumping while she was in the middle of pumping. I heard that a lot of the gas stations had shut down because they were out of fuel and they aren't expecting to get restocked for about a week or two. At some gas stations the price is over $4. WTF!?
My mother thinks that this whole thing is being blown out of proportion. That Bush is turning this into gas thing into more of a disaster than it needs to be. She thinks that if Bush can build up enough fear in our country that the people who have been resisting oil drilling in Alaska will back down and ANWR will be opened up for drilling. Who knows, she could be right. I mean, we have reserves, and if people conserve we until the oil companies can get back on their feet, and then continue to do so, I don't understand why things won't work out.
Whatever.
Tonight I had to take pictures for the GSO... however, when I showed up to my assignment I had a "shadow." Gah.
Oh, and did I mention I went to the beach today? And I was the only human being there all day that I saw in my location. Felt like heaven.
