Metafictional Dream
I had a dream that I was in a gritty, Southland-style cop show - at least until the characters accidentally wound up in a more idealistic and whimsical world after chasing a criminal across Lake Michigan in their car (as you do). And so, in order to get back, they set out to make that world grittier. At least until one of the characters discovered that being in this world gave him ninja powers and transforming fan blades.
And then I woke up.
(Interestingly, the gritty world was a mixture of St. Petersburg and Cabrini-Green, while the idealistic world was a mixture of Manhattan and downtown Chicago)
