Christian Broadcast Network is reviving the 1980s campy Evangelical curiosity Superbook - this time with CGI - and all I can say is that they are definitely trying way, way, way too hard to appeal to kids. All for noting, if you ask me - the kids who watch CBN aren't going to care about being "cool" and accept it without pause. Of course, if they are trying to appeal to kids outside the Evangelical bubble... Oh boy.
See, here is the thing - the Evangelical bubble is great at nurturing the new generation of conservative, Evangelical Christians, but because its so focused on protecting the flock from any non-Evangelical influences, the creators of such niche products lose sight of what works in mainstream America.
Thing is, religious propaganda doesn't have to be awful. I remember enjoying Flying House when I was a kid, and I was a die-hard atheist back then. Sure, looking back at it now, it was cheesy, but it was more entertaining and less didactic than what we have here.
If CBN really wanted to appeal to kids, they would hire someone who isn't immersed in the bubble. But, of course, they would never do that, so any outreach they attempt is doomed to fail.
