When SEPTA, the transit agency responsible for all public transportation in southern Pennsylvania (and parts of New Jersey and Delaware) unveiled new train sets for it's regional rail network, it did so in style. It put together a
somewhat nifty video advertising it, and a
less nifty video to highlight its special features (unfortunately, I can't embed either).
SEPTA's regional rail network fascinates me because it's the closest thing America has to the Russian-style elektrichka service. It's the only region in United States where every single line is electrified. The low-level platforms kind of break the illusion, but I'll take what I can get.
As for the new trains themselves, they kind of remind me of the
South Shore Line trains - outside, they look like heavy-duty electrichka-style trains, but the interior design looks more like something you'd see on the 'L' or other city-wide rapid transit network. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. I kind of like the open space aspect of it.
