4 Times Dean was Mistaken as the Younger Winchester and 1 Time Immortality REALLY sucked

Sam at 22
Dean never thought he was short and he never thought that being shorter than his monster-sized brother would ever bother him. But then the bartender doesn't even ask for Sam's ID when he holds out his hand for Dean's.

Sam at 35
The first time someone refers to Dean as Sammy's younger brother, it brings him up short. He'd stopped aging at 28 and Sammy is well past thirty. Dean has always been the shorter brother, but from this point on he realizes he'll always look younger too.

"Guess this means you have to start listening to me more, little brother," Sam teases once they are alone in the car.

"Not gonna happen," Dean snaps and puts the car in gear, pealing away from the curb.

Sam makes another joke, something about being more mature so it's natural that people think he's the older brother, but Dean's only half listening.

It's the first time the fact that Sam is growing old really hits him and he doesn't like the feeling at all.

Sam at 56
It was bad enough that Sam had looked older than Dean for decades, but when the waitress had asked if his Dad needed anything else, he almost lost it.

JD at 30
JD and Richie were still snickering and Dean was still fuming. He'd been hitting on this hot chick and it had been going great right up until the moment she'd asked if Dean wanted to slip away from his big brother for something more intimate.

It had gone down hill after that and now the two chuckle heads just wouldn't let it go.

"JD, maybe you should you should take your little brother home," Richie teased, "I think he's having a tantrum."

"Shut up, Richie," Dean barked. "It's not funny. I changed his diapers. JD is not allowed to look older than me." He glared at his nephew. "It's that stupid beard thing he's growing on his face. It obviously confuses people."

Sam at ??? (Immortality really sucks sometimes)
Dean wasn't much for walks in the park, but Sam seemed to enjoy them. His brother was moving slowly now and it was getting harder and harder to see the younger brother he'd raised in the old withered face. At least Sam still had all his hair; that thought almost made Dean smile.

Sam stumbled a little and Dean caught his arm to stop him from falling.

Sam pulled away only to stumble in the other direction. "Damn it!" He righted himself without Dean's help this time.

"How about we sit down?" Dean pointed to a park bench.

Sighing, Sam nodded and settled himself down. "Getting old sucks."

Dean didn't say anything. What could he say? Sam was dying; not of anything specific, just the reality of getting old.

They sat there silently for a few moments before Sam spoke again, "You'll watch out for them after I'm gone."

"Let's not have this conversation."

Sam continued as if Dean hadn't spoken. "JD's getting too old to hunt. You have to convince him it's time to stop. I don't worry about the twins or Sam Jr., but Robbie's still looking for direction. You need to watch out for him. And MJ…"

Dean interrupted him with a wave of his hand. "I said we're not having this conversation."

"Katie's gone, Dean, and I'm…"

"STOP IT!"

"No, I won't. We need to have this conversation."

Sam had tried to talk about his dying before, but Dean had always been able to put him off. It seemed this time Sam was going to finish this conversation regardless of how he felt. Dean slumped against the bench, resigned to let Sam have his say. "Fine. Talk."

"I need you to promise me that you will always be there for them, no matter how many generations pass." Sam shifted on the bench to look Dean straight in the eye; silently demanding his pledge.

"Dammit, Sam. Stop with the puppy dog eyes." Dean still couldn't fight his little brother when he gave him that look, but this time he noticed that that Sam's eyes were different, old; bearing all the weariness of a man nearing the end of his life. Immortality really sucked sometimes. Sighing he added, "Your kids and grandkids have an entire race of Immortals watching their backs. You know nothings going to happen to them."

"I want you to be there for them after I'm gone."

Dean wanted to rage at Sam that he wasn't going to die, that there was still time to find a way to make him Immortal too, but he really wanted this conversation to be over. He patted Sam on the knee as he stood up. "I'm starving. How about we go for some bacon cheeseburgers?"

"Dean! I'm serious. Stop changing the subject. Promise me that you'll always be there for them."

Dean looked up at the sky trying to bite back the sadness that was threatening to overwhelm him. He really, really hated when Sam got like this. "Yeah Sam, you can count on me. I'll always be Uncle Dean. Forever. I promise. Happy now?"

"Yes, very!" Sam smiled and grabbed Dean's arm using it to gain his feet. "And now I think I'd like one of those cheeseburgers."

"About time you gave up on that rabbit food."

"Race you back to the car." Sam chuckled as he took off.

"I'll just give you a head start, old man."

"Who you calling old, big brother?" Sam called back over his shoulder.

As Dean watched his brother move away from him, more of a spring in his step then he'd seen in quite a while, it dawned on him that the promise he'd made hadn't really been for Sam's peace of mind at all.
