Jason Todd is a character from DC Comics Batman storylines. The most popular retcon of his origins places him as a street kid that caught Batman's attention when he's interrupted in the middle of stealing the tires off the Batmobile. With Dick having fallen out with Bruce and becoming Nightwing, Bruce takes Jason in, and trains him to be the second Robin. However, life on the streets has given Jason his own sense of justice, and things eventually begin to sour, culminating when Bruce suspects Jason in the death of a man that Batman couldn't bring to justice due to diplomatic immunity.
On the outs with Bruce, Jason jumps at the chance to get out of Gotham when he discovers that Catherine Todd wasn't his biological mother, and seeks out the woman that gave birth to him, Sheila Haywood. Halfway across the world and without any back up, Jason ends up being sold out to the Joker. In the end, he ends up brutally beaten and left for dead in an abandoned warehouse set to explode, dying alone with Bruce just minutes away.
Through the events in Crisis on Infinite Earths, Jason is mysteriously resurrected, but the wounds he received at the Joker's hands leave him brain damaged and wandering Gotham aimlessly. When Talia Al Ghul intervenes, he's rescued and eventually healed via immersion in the Lazarus Pit, but then learns that in his absence, not only has Bruce replaced him as Robin, but that the Joker is still alive. Already unstable from his exposure to the Pit and furious at the betrayal, he vows to get his revenge and bring justice to Gotham his way, as the villain Red Hood.
