My house is as hurricane-proofed as it's going to be. I put away my BBQ grill, all my yard tools and stupid stuff like empty plant pots and bird feeders - anything that would be likely to fly away if we do indeed get tropical storm (or worse) force winds, as is currently forecast. I brought a couple of the lighter lawn chairs into the house and lined up the wooden chairs and tables up against the house. If they go flying... oh well. They were too heavy for me to move any further. I'm not supposed to be doing this sort of heavy lifting at all after my surgery, but Hurricane Irene doesn't seem to care about my health.
The local power company sent me a robo-call to warn me that there was a hurricane on the way (ORLY?). In the call, they said that it's likely that the power will go out in the region and remain out for several days. Several days. Good to know that PEPCO is planning for success, as usual.
Given that we may lose power for a day or so (or several), I thought I'd better get some ice and extra packs of that blue fake ice stuff to stuff into my freezer. I also figured that I'd get some extra ice and put in into my cooler in case I wanted to get stuff like yogurt out of my fridge and store it somewhere on ice if necessary. However...no cooler. I looked all over for it but couldn't find it so I headed out to the hardware store to buy another small cooler. Alas, I got to the Home Depot just in time for a fire alarm to go off just as I was walking in. o_0 Headed for a different store and arrived just in time there to be told that they'd sold out all of their big coolers a few minutes before I arrived, but they might have a couple of smaller coolers left in the back of the store. I nabbed a couple of the little coolers and figured while I was at it that I would also pick up a tiny, table-top sized BBQ grill. Seriously, if we end up out of power for days, I'll still be able to cook my (rapidly thawing) frozen food out on my front porch. If we don't lose power, I'll still have this adorable, tiny grill. At minimum, I won't have to go downstairs and try to get the bigger BBQ grill out of the shed. It can stay in there for weeks for all I care now. Going up and down stairs still hurts like hell and I'm trying to avoid it when possible.
Speaking of cooking and losing power, if I do lose power, I figure that the first thing that would have spoiled in my freezer was the bag of shrimp that I bought. I'm going to cook that tonight and eat it today and tomorrow while I still do have power. Perhaps I will make faux-Jambalaya. I have been wanting Cajun food and the only nearby Cajun restaurant closed up a while ago.
Good luck to everybody who is in the path of this hurricane. I hope we all come out of it unscathed with our health and homes intact, power on, and no flooding or downed trees to mess up the roads.
