SCANDAL!

Margaret Atwood didn't make the Giller shortlist! D-: Bastards! I was so excited to see Year of the Flood on the long list because you never see sci-fi novels in the running for the Giller, but alas...

I did indeed finish reading that one and was quite geekily thrilled with it. It definitely calls back to the first book and you'll get much more out of it if you've read Oryx and Crake, but I think it would still be pretty enjoyable even if you haven't read that one. There were bits of it that felt... shallow, like she could've made the universe more complex in places, but there wasn't any part of it that I didn't enjoy. I definitely recommend it. It's thinky, emotionally-driven sci-fi with some excellent main characters! (Speaking of which, one thing that really did throw me was that she had two narrators, but had one writing in first person and the other in third. Once they actually met up and started 'seeing' the same things, it was a bit jarring, but I fangirl Atwood hard enough to give her the benefit of the doubt and assume that she was trying to say something about the self-involvement of the respective characters. *g*)

Aw. You know winter's almost here when the landlord runs around shoving "Please don't let homeless people sleep in the lobby, guys" notices under the doors.
