[Well, Captain Aubrey has been in Luceti one night, arrived by the good will - or not - of Captain Sparrow and Lieutenant Kennedy and survived by the grace of Captain Hornblower's hospitality. Hazzah

[In the event that the Gentlemen of Luceti find their way down to the grocery store, they may just find one Miss Selphie wandering throughout the isles plopping miscellaneous items into a basket.
Just ignore the little red wagon that seems to be parked outside the entrance with her name written on it in bright yellow paint. Don't trip over it now boys.]

The draft takes men and women, no matter the age.
[He does not approve, his tone says that.]
But Miss Selphie proved herself a great asset to Mr. Kennedy and myself. Earned herself the rank of gunner, actually.
[And now, his smile is almost paternal.]
And if I should ever get a proper ship in this place, and she would like... [it's half to Aubrey, half to Selphie] I should certainly be happy to rate her a midshipman.
[Because this is a strange world, but he likes this girl.]

[Selphie spies the look on Captain Aubrey's face and looks at Horatio while giving a discreet point toward their companion with a curious look on her face.]
[Action] You did the same thing to H at first, Selphie dear.seventeensirSeptember 16 2011, 01:18:35 UTC
Captain Aubrey is from the same world I am, Miss Selphie. Where are from... the only women who are gunners or midshipmen or the like are the ones who pass themselves off as men in the service.
[Selphie isn't entirely certain that she should say what she wants to say but she holds her tongue. From what she knows of their culture, women did... womanly duties and while Selphie's fine with domestic duties, she needs a little action in her life too.]
So you wouldn't mind if one was completely open about it and serving under you then?

[Jack needed to think about this. What women had managed to sneak into the service worked just as hard as the men did without complaint or giving themselves away. True, he was used to the role women played in his world. But Stephen was always telling him things about the natural world he rather wished he didn't learn.
Such as that some female insects ate their male partners after coupling! And that in lion herds - prides, was it? - the females did the hunting.
But then, women were disastrous luck. They would distract the crew, to boot. Who knew what could happen to the girl...
But then, Hornblower put stock in this one.
He hummed and hawed, going between what he knew and what he was used to.]
...I suppose..it wouldn't make much of a difference...
But then...
No I suppose I wouldn't mind. I can't say the same for any other but if she were to do ...her...duty and respect the laws at sea....

I was seventeen when I first went to sea, Miss Selphie. [There is still that actual smile on his features.] I'd never been on a ship before in my life-- not when I was old enough to remember, at least. I learned well enough, I think. I've no doubt you would learn even faster.
[This is a very, very good mood, Selphie. This is the exception, not the rule.]

...Be afraid, Selphie. Horatio may actually be almost smiling...]
Miss Selphie!

She looks up when she hears Horatio's voice and flashes him a sunny smile.]
Hello hello!

Who's this, Hornblower?
Reply
Miss Selphie, Captain Aubrey.
[He chuckles faintly.]
Miss Selphie is one of the residents who fought alongside myself and Mr. Kennedy in the last battle we were pulled into by the Malnosso.

It's not gonna happen. The hamster died. So he will just ...continue to observe until it is replaced.]

Well, I've still got a lot to learn to be honest but I'm up to the task if you'll have me.
