the party was ridoncerous! people seemed to have a great time and, even though i was working the whole night, i had a blast too. things were a little hectic to start. people started to show up and we weren't quite set up yet. the kegs were giving us problems and we had to pump out the beer super slowly the whole night. the mics cut out during the performance (but did get fixed pretty quick). that and a few bothersome drunken customers were really the only problems int he night. the rest of it was fucking great! final head count, including those of us working was just over 200 people, i think, and even though we were over-budget on the party, we still managed to break about even. considering the $2000 loss in the last event we threw, this was a stellar success. we got lots of positive feedback on the magazine too. a lot of people left with samples and we still have enough left over to run another TTC campaign in the new year. AND the added awareness of our product has motivated me to do those "little things" to make it that much better. typos aren't cool anymore. halfway perfect layouts aren't cool anymore. and, although it's kinda too late for this next issue (seeing as how everything is already done and it's just waiting to be released on the 1st of Jan), i've found a solution to our continuity problem and it's gonna be implemented from next issue onwards. we still need some more fixes, but our strongest product is getting closer and closer to perfect and that's very exciting. we've got a 1 year plan to make this business something serious and this party was just what we needed to motivate us to do it. the show of support from friends and friends of friends for what we put together got me on such a crazy high that i've been buzzing the whole fucking day!
notable memories from the night:
- amit saying, "yo, next year, you guys should hire people to do all the serving and cleaning and stuff, so you guys can party too!" why this was notable: without me having to say anything, he's already looking forward to another one of our events for next year. we ARE planning to do a bigger, more spectacular event for new years eve next year, but we didn't mention that till the end of the night and as people were leaving, so his assumtion was very validating for our efforts.
- after everyone had cleared out and we finished cleaning up the community centre, we all hung around in the lobby wishing each other a merry christmas, congratulating each other on the work and hugging each other goodbye. it felt like being back in SAC, after an assembly, or after a drama presentation that had gone over very well. that excited energy... i'm never going to get sick of that.
- slow dancing with megan -- seeing di dancing with twan and the look we gave each other. hahaha...
- seeing so many people that i haven't seen in years, and watching them have a WICKED time
- jay coming up to me going: "yo man, congratulations! this party was wicked! you guys are the only people i know who'd do this!" that's such a huge compliment, i didn't even know how to take it.
- elizabeth telling me that she thought the sample magazine is hilarious and that she's going to tell all her "people" about it
thanks to y'all who came out. that was definitely one of the most memorable nights of my 2005. merry christmas! 2006 is going to be SICK! WOOOT!
