Shinigami eagerly waited for the shuttle to take off, looking every bit the child he was pretending to be. When the time came closer to take off, as the shuttle actually started moving, he clenched the arms of his seat with nervousness.

The nervousness was completely fake, but some of the eagerness was real. The energy he put into the eagerness was pretend, but he was looking forward to seeing the colonies and actually being in space.

All of the stories that Angela had told him and his siblings were amazing, but his favorites out of all of them were always the ones set in space. She had known this, which was the reason that he was currently on the shuttle. When she had arranged everything for their escape from the labs that had created them, she had split almost everyone up, scattering them across the earth and the colonies. Shinigami had gotten one of the colony tickets and a back story that said he was traveling alone to meet his parents at the colony.

This led to his current persona: the hyper kid that was babbling to everyone in site, carefully telling stories without any real details. He was counting on being so annoying that he would slip from everyone’s minds. Plus, he doubted that the labs would believe that he could be that passionate: assassins were supposed to be emotionless, after all, so that was what he had shown them.

The shuttle took off, shooting up through the atmosphere and then making a course to the scheduled colony: L2. Shinigami feigned the nervousness until they leveled off. The shuttle did not have artificial gravity, as it was one of the cheapest shuttles out there and Shinigami marveled as his cup floated up out of his reach. The man sitting next to him smiled as he returned the cup, locking it into place on the tray.

“You might want to be more careful with that there,” the man advised before going back to his computer.

“Thank you, sir,” Shinigami chirped. He resisted the urge to fiddle more with his cup and the zero gravity and instead turned to stare out the window.

Earth glowed with the light from the sun and Shinigami could just see a colony in the distance. Beyond the earth, it was all darkness with a few lights breaking through in little pinpricks. It fascinated Shinigami more than the zero gravity did. He had experienced zero gravity back in the labs as part of the tests and training, but he rarely was allowed to go out at night and never just to see the night sky.

That had been one of the first things that he had done when they had escaped from the labs. He had run straight through the night, but stopped around half an hour to dawn, where he had curled up in a pile of leaves. Before he dropped off to sleep, he had stared up at the stars through the leaves and the trees. The sight filled him with determination: he would make it to space and be among those stars. Later on, he found a road and hitched a ride to the nearest town. He moved from city to city before he judged that he was far enough away to risk organized travel.

And now he was in space, where he could disappear and never be found by anyone but his siblings. Angela would be proud of him; that was a good feeling.

As any child would do, as Angela had taught him Shinigami went back to playing with the zero gravity. That had been another thing that they weren’t allowed to do, even when they spent days in the zero gravity. But, he had always wanted to try this stuff. He took his cup out of the holder and let it hang in midair as he drank from it. When he was done drinking, he pulled away and watched as the cup spun around. Some of his soda leaked out when it turned in the right way and he leaned forward to slurp it up.

The man beside him glanced over to him and shook his head, but Shinigami didn’t stop playing with his drink. The drink and the peanuts were the only things that the shuttle provided and only before take off, so that the stewards only needed to move around as necessary. Shinigami also took great fun in launching his peanuts across the room. He was not the only one doing this, as peanuts from other places in the shuttle also floated around before he had added his to the mix.

The rest of the journey to the colony was fun; the man beside Shinigami had even slyly given his own peanuts for Shinigami to play with. Some of them, Shinigami even ate. Finally, Shinigami went back to the nervousness as the shuttle docked at the colony. This time, a faint trace of that nervousness was real. Here was another hard part; here’s where he needed to vanish.

He waited patiently while the aisles emptied out until it was his row. Ignoring the instructions given to him, Shinigami bounded up at the same time that the man next to him stood up. Proclaiming that he was big enough to see himself out, he was allowed to leave the shuttle with the other passengers. The first stage was complete.

Once out of the shuttle, he bounced in place as he eagerly scanned the shuttle port for his parents. After a short amount of time, he exclaimed as if he had spotted them and ran into the crowd. Second stage complete; it was easy to disappear into the crowd after that.

He made his way out of the shuttle port without any trouble, taking his last steps to freedom. He had done it; he had escaped from the labs and made his way to the stars. He was in space, now all he needed to do was figure out where to go from there.
