Most Annoying Office Habits: I clicked on this Yahoo teaser. My first thought, "Grist for the writers' workroom at the friendly set of The Office."

the walk: acoustic live: Yesterday, my Hanson dvd / cd combo arrived like a letter from a friend you've been meaning to call, worse you canceled on for the lamest of reasons.

Off the top, the set is just beautiful and the singing soulful, unstartlingly so--yet still startling, somehow. It hit me, my overwhelming sense while viewing was that Hanson KNEW, were aware. How? Their bowed heads--Zac's in particular. Their somewhat muted harmonies. Taylor seemed subdued. And Isaac--painfully pressing ahead, bobbing his head in his intense way. It felt very tragic. And they once again sounded just the right note!

I sensed my betrayal. I felt I had moved away, imperceptively and without meaning to . . . yet it had happened. And I expected to be annoyed by another goofy clip of the three that had begun to feel self-involved with time. Instead I was met with the familiar pure sparkly white lights and complicated carpets--never making real eye-contact.

I didn't make it to the Boston concert so the dvd's timing felt really uncanny.

The setlist:
  • Great Divide I've expressed skepticism, hinting at a naive heroism on the band's part when it comes to this song? Try telling them, but after this song. Try it.
  • Go The lamp gets dusty. The pipes get rusty . . .
  • Something Going Round Much more mellow than I've been interpreting it. It left me feeling self-conscious. "Isn't this the one?"
  • I've Been Down This is when things started to get spooky because I am convinced the only reason Hanson included this one is a result of internet chatter surrounding the remaining fan base's affinity for this song. Proof I'm just as self-indulgent as ever when it comes to the band. Classic example of the "misery" factor--a bouncy song with sad, sad lyrics.
  • Got a Hold on Me This was my first time hearing this one and I loved it. Pure Hanson--reflective and sweet, with bitter edges. What I love most is that it borders on cheesy because it feels like earnest CCM (If you don't know what this means, then you will dismiss my meaning entirely anyway). The best line, "I scratch my skin, 'cause you leave me dry. I'm back in deals with thieves and liars." Then the base that follows is simply delightful.
  • On the Rocks Another first that wasn't immediately persuasive--yet.
  • Been There Before The classic final number--a crowd favorite. A wink to the audience, "Don't do that. We don't want that. We want more than that." How is it possible, Hanson?!

I've purchased h.net pre-sale tickets to the Chicago House of Blues show which is GA (no need for pre-sale) and probably won't sell out (no need for pre-sale). And it was moved from a Saturday to a Sunday, inexplicably. A school night. This involves requesting a personal day. I guess, "It's a date."

P.S. I found it telling that they left "Georgia" off of this dvd. So personal. And actually, that song would have been more directly a call back to the faithful. AND hey, I just realized--I did PURCHASE the dvd. My loyalty is still in tact . . . and I really do miss their 3-headed commentary. Back to checking on "Taking the Walk" updates . . .

Plus, the 3 bonus tracks on the American CD version are amazing: Got a Hold on Me, I've Been Down (acoustic), Something Going Round (acoustic)
