Fortune: Some people have it, some people seek it, some claim to predict it, and some say that it favors the brave. Write a ficlette inspired by the word 'fortune'.

“Coach Devlin told me he thinks y’ got a fine future with the skills y’ got on the field,” his father said as mother passed him the dish of potatoes to serve.

“Said if y’ can catch the eye of them talent scouts they’d be likely to keep an eye on you,” he continued, spooning out the fluffy white mixture. His brother and sister sat silently listening to their father, eyes bright with excitement.

“Could make y’ fortune, if y’ catch their eye,” his father stated finally. “Could make y’ fortune.”

It was for that reason he’d not taken his brother and sister to the game that day. He’d cried off to his mum, a small resigned sigh and shake of her head admitting she understood. He wanted to see the selectors. He wanted to be able to move without having to worry where his younger siblings were. She agreed that it’d be best if they went with her and his father to Omagh, to do the messages they needed to go there for.

The game had been good, and the talent scouts in attendance. He’d been introduced to them, shaken their hands and give words of encouragement. He’d left the field that day walking on air, a smile wider than any ocean and dreams of a fortune won from hard work and tough play. Of his parents and sister and brother being proud, cheering him on.

Yes, all the best laid plans… blown to smithereens.
