Catching up with Tess before St Patrick's Day

When Tess had moved in to the second apartment upstairs at the bar Brendan had thought one of the advantages would be that they'd see a little more of each other, but it hadn't been like that at all yet. He walked up the stairs from the kitchens, a hot cup of fresh coffee in his hand and made his way down to her door. Knocking on it loudly he ( Read more... )

"Erk," said Tess, rolling over in bed. She pushed hair from her eyes and burrowed deeper under the covers. The clock said it was close to noon, her normal time to be sleeping after work. "How can you sound so cheerful so early!" she called anyway.

"One of the joys of being big brother, getting to wake you up!" he returned through the closed door. "Got some coffee here for you. Will that help put a smile on that pretty face of yours?"

"I guess we could try it." She was already smiling though as she got up and padded to the door. She opened it and stood there completely naked. "Come on in."

"Still having trouble with your wardrobe?" he asked, squinting a little as the silhouette of a naked Tess was outlined in the doorway. He held out the coffee. "Poor Sam missed the show. Next time he might have the breakfast ready when I head on up here."

He jerked to the side trying to avoid her jab, and winced a little, putting his hand to the spot and rubbing it. "Yeah, well, guess I can't argue with you on that point." He gave her a lop-sided grin.

"So you got any ideas about any of these kind of schools they have for dancing and that? Or courses, or whatever?"

She shooked her head and gave him a wan smile. "No. I only just kind of seriously started thinking about it five minutes ago. I don't know anything, or where, or anything. It's... a little overwhelming to think about really doing it."

"C'mon luv, you need to start thinking about these things. I know you miss Marianne, and it's only been a few months, but d'you think she'd be happy with you not even bothering? You can use the computer in the office, when Patrick's not doing the accounts on it, and have a look for these schools, or colleges or whatever. If you see one you like you can call 'em up."

"It's not that I haven't been bothering," she said, a little hurt. "It's a pretty big deal to think about picking up and leaving behind everything you've ever known. Mom's grave, you, Vic and Face and my friends. And besides..." She dropped her eyes. "I don't know if I can afford this. I don't have a lot of money. Something like dance school can't possibly be cheap. Maybe I could get a scholarship or something, or loans I guess."
