Title: Tired
Author: saturn_necklace/stormy_words
Pairing/group: Ohno/Nino friendship
Word count: 884
Rating: PG
Genre: Friendship(?)
Warnings: British English.
Summary: Nino shows up at Ohno's apartment in the middle of the night.
AN: This is the result of me experimenting with styles at about three in the morning when I couldn't sleep. I'm fairly happy with it, which is good, even if I did only get about three and a half hours of sleep in the end :/

It’s late when Ohno hears a knock at the door (early actually, he supposes, considering the fact that it’s three in the morning already). At first he thinks maybe it’s a figment of his imagination - it is the middle of the night, after all, and Ohno’s just on the verge of sleep, so it’s highly possible that the knocking really is just something that his almost-asleep brain dreamt up for no apparent reason. After a few moments of silence the knocks sound again, only this time they sound a little less like knocks and a little more like someone’s attacking his door with a hammer (which Ohno thinks is extremely unlikely, since he lives in rather a nice neighbourhood, where he’s never seen any violent looking, hammer wielding people wandering around) and Ohno deduces that it’s not his imagination after all - his imagination has never been quite that loud.

He crawls out of bed, not bothering with a shirt as he shuffles out of his bedroom and towards the front door wearing only an old pair of Pokémon boxer shorts. For a moment he regrets having foregone the shirt, as he’s greeted by a cold gust of wind the moment the door’s open; it’s closed again within seconds, though, and Nino’s already slipping past him, making beeline for Ohno’s old, worn couch. The springs have gone, and it’s faded from a bright red to an orange-ish sort of colour, but Ohno’s never minded that, and neither does Nino as he sinks down into it.

Ohno shoots him a look which says ‘What brings you here at this time of night?’ and Nino just sighs. Probably, Ohno thinks, if it didn’t happen to be three in the morning at that particular moment in time, he would have voiced that question; but it is three in the morning, and Ohno’s probably still on the verge of sleep, so he didn’t.

Ohno sits down next to Nino, and Nino automatically shuffles a little closer - like he always does. Probably, Ohno should feel kind of awkward sat there in only his Pokémon boxer shorts, but he’s too tired to feel embarrassed or awkward - and anyway, even if it didn’t happen to be three am, it’s Nino sitting next to him, and Ohno doesn’t get awkward with Nino.

“It’s three in the morning.” Ohno states, no hidden meanings or questions behind the sentence - he’s just stating a fact.
“I couldn’t sleep.” Nino offers as an answer to the question that Ohno didn’t ask - the reason for his presence - and they both know it isn’t true, because Nino’s three weeks into filming his latest drama, and there are dark circles under his eyes, and he looks just about ready to pass out at any moment, but Ohno doesn’t mind playing along if that’s what Nino wants to pretend.

Fifteen minutes later it’s three fifteen in the morning, and Nino’s cooking them both breakfast for no apparent reason. Ohno doesn’t mind though, because it’s three fifteen am, and Ohno’s still on the verge of sleep, and it’s Nino, and Ohno doesn’t mind Nino doing weird things like frying eggs in Ohno’s kitchen in the early hours of the morning, if that’s what Nino really wants to do; Ohno makes them both a cup of tea because he has nothing better to do, and he’s been feeling kind of thirsty for about fifteen minutes.

They eat their fried eggs and drink their tea at Ohno’s kitchen table. Neither of them speak because Ohno doesn’t have anything to say, and Nino’s still pretending that he’s only there because he couldn’t sleep. Ohno’s woken up a little, now that he’s eaten something, and he’s pretty sure that something’s happened, but if Nino’s not going to say then Ohno’s not going to push, because he’s Ohno, and Nino’s Nino, and if Nino wanted someone to make him talk about it then he would’ve gone to Jun, because Jun’s good at talking about things; Ohno’s good at not asking, and just acting like he always does, so he doesn’t push.

Ten minutes later - when they’re sat on Ohno’s couch again, Nino curled against Ohno’s side, head on Ohno’s shoulder - Nino sighs again, and Ohno wonders if maybe he should pretend he’s Jun for a while because that’s the twelfth time Nino’s sighed in the past five minutes, and Ohno doesn’t think that’s a good thing. Then he stops wondering though, because Nino starts to speak, and that means that he doesn’t have to wonder anymore.

“I’m so tired, Oh-chan.”
Ohno knows that the simple sentence means so much more - Nino’s tired of so many things. Ohno can tell that Nino’s exhausted both physically and mentally, and he’s still curious as to what’s happened, but he knows that Nino will tell him if he wants Ohno to know; so he doesn’t ask, he just smiles and presses a gentle, comforting, kiss on the top of Nino’s head and offers some words of wisdom.
“Why don’t you sleep then?”

Nino smiles because when Ohno says it like that it sounds so simple, and he takes Ohno’s hand in his own to give it a reassuring squeeze because maybe, he thinks, maybe it is that simple.

“Let’s sleep, Oh-chan.”
