To that anonymous reviewer on ff.net re: Awareness7: Chuck has always treated Nate like he did there. Yes, he's his best friend and he wouldn't ever cross the line into insulting him, but he taunted him and thought he was a bit of a ditz in this chapter (everyone knows arranged marriages aren't so far off the beaten path especially in the upper echelons of society, and love has nothing to do with it). Nope, I do not hate Nate (only the show's portrayal of him... and that does include Chace Crawford). I hate the way he's written and how his storylines are strung together in a schizophrenic on crack fashion. But I respect the character himself, just like I respect Serena, just like I respect my eldest sister who's a gigantic ditz.
Nate is naïve. Even still now. So, to each their own, but I just wanted to clarify that I have always written and will continue to write as realistically and as much within canon as possible, especially with this fic. Chuck is abusive even of those he loves (hai Blair). But, anyway, I did have Nate joke around with Chuck so there goes your canon of how they're friends in the first place: Chuck fathers him a bit but it's all in good fun (and Nate knows it), and Nate yearns for Chuck's self-confidence and appreciates his lack of smile-and-nod bullshit. Nate also lends a bit of innocence in Chuck's shit-wallpapered life. It's a symbiotic friendship, okay. I totally respect that. I hoped it came across in the chapter but I understand it might have come across as Chuck belittling Nate. It wasn't like that, believe me. Remember that Chuck is a bit frustrated by the whole "last night" deal with Blair. And he's just a tad nervous (but won't admit it) about the necklace business and the prospect of uh... maybe Blair could send him home with his ears ringing. Just a tad nervous. Nerves, you know, they're sadly not made of steel.
So yes. This is the explanation you would have gotten if you'd signed in.
ETA: Gee, I sound like a whiny "never criticise me" writer. No, never. I love crits. I love explaining my viewpoint. As long as you don't outright flame me I'm very civil and I can take it with a grain of salt. But when you don't sign in? You're a coward, pure and simple.
In other news, I have begun Suzanne Brockmann's Flashpoint and the female lead just took off her top in a strip joint and surprised the heck out of her secret agency teammate. No, it's not like that ;) But looks good so far. I freaking love this author's subtle quirkiness.
