writing and books mostly

Analysing poetry was a major part of my English classes in high school. Honest? I haven't learned a single rule of English grammar because 1) I'm self-taught from reading books and watching tv and 2) Advanced English students (I still think whoever placed me in that level was on crack, I was basic level at best back then) were deemed too "advanced" to break out the grammar books. So, what did we do? We read mucho. At first it was just books. In grade 7 we read them out loud in class, and it was terrifying for me because I wasn't confident with my accent yet. Then we had in-class discussions and it was awesome. Then we moved to plays, and we still read them out loud (MacBeth!) And watched the 70's film adaptation and looool the rolling head at the end! By then we'd already read a couple of poems and analysed them in-depth and learned the terminology -- forgot everything jsyk :S -- but afterward we charged into poetry head-on and I wasn't extraordinary but did fairly well (let's just say I was above average and battling it out with one of my girlfriends. She was a native speaker herself (yes, I'm very driven).

So anyway. I like poetry but I'm not "in love" with it either, as I've repeated over and over. There are so many readings one can get from a simple enough poem, it all depends on the reader. I was reading on a lyrics site that someone thought Imogen Heap's song Hide and Seek was about a breakup, but I never got that meaning myself; I get the sense that it's about an apocalypse, a political takeover, something really huge that's bigger than two people. But, to each their reading.

All that to say, I got a review just now that got me thinking about my writing process for my latest poem Rattling Bones and Perspiration.

I understand it, and yet I don't...

Poetry reading is a lot like that to me sometimes. Even though I don't necessarily get what the poet's trying to say, the words kind of imprint themselves in my brain and make me feel despite not having the full picture.

So here's how I attempt to succintly (ha) explain the idea behind that poem and the title that came to me first:

It's about sex and the "burgeoning" of love that they didn't want and yet couldn't stop. They hated the feeling because they couldn't bear to face something that required "baring all", and yet they were kind of wondering what it'd be like so curiosity got the better of them.

Rattling bones = sexual and frustratingly shaking the other person
Perspiration = sexual and from the long, drawn-out game of pushing away and yet refusing to let go

Yes, I'm deep like that sometimes ;)

Next order of business. I WAS BUSY-BUSY-BUSY TODAY XD Holy schnolls did the time fly by. We also had a paid lunch today because the big boss was in town. However I was manning the phone and so (thank god it was someone's husband) this one time I kind of choked on my food while answering. Bad idea lol. Blah blah blah insur-ance, how may I -- CHOKE is kind of O______O but quite funny in retrospect haha.

The receptionist is interested in the book I'm currently reading. Veronica Wolff's Sword of the Highlands. That surprised me. She reads Agatha Christie and John Grisham usually. Oh well!

He's shooting dopamine into his arm the night before he has to go meet with the creepy weird claw-ish vagina (THAT REALLY MARKED ME OKAY) symphath... princess I think she was. Oh shit Rhev, why use a soiled syringe bb? I honestly didn't used to care that much for Rhev -- I was curious, yes, but with this book and his thoughts out in the open I'm starting to really sympathise with his condition and I kind of want to cuddle him a bit (Z is still it though. Deal). I like Ehlena. She just did a search on two people: my gut feeling says she checked out Rhev's file and her foiled date's (I vote he's been captured or something. I'll cut a bitch if he just didn't care. Not so much if he just forgot, but I'll still glare a lot). Check it out, she's probably the call that he ignored just now, and she'll find a way somehow to get to him and tend his infection. How? I'll bet Bella's listed as next-of-kin so she'll go to the Mansion and Z will be all fretful about his pregnant shellan and it'll be oh-so-cute :D

Qhuinn needs to get over himself. "I'm not into redheads" was such a fucking huge pile of bullshit and just to hurt Blay. Blay smokes now because of you, playboy.

John/Xhex still doesn't stroke my fancy.

OMG Dr. Manello! omgomgomgomg please let whatsherface V's twin meet him in this book. I read rumours I think last year about them being an item. I want to meet herrrr. And isn't he like Murhder's son or something and therefore Wrath's kin? And and and ooooh Murhder and Xhex? I need more details geez. And where's Torh?

I still hold hope for Lash. Just a bit. But less and less. I hope he'll realise he doesn't have to follow in his real daddy's footsteps just because he found him. Duh. Man up, dude.

What else what else what else. Oh, Wrath. NGL, I never adored him. And he's pissing me off right this moment. I get the whole "I'm getting antsy shifting papers around like some aristocratic pansy" but fuck, get some backup at least. And the baby thing? Hi, look at Z. He's scared shitless for Bella but it just makes him appreciate her pregnancy that much more. Shit, that must have hurt Beth, to be told "I'll never have a baby with you" or the like. Women are kind of paranoid on that front, honey.

I... think that's it for now. Shall go back to reading :)
