Ficlet: Shades of Brown (YnM --Tat/Tsu)

Feb 14, 2005 00:24

*Note: I'd like to state that just because it's technically Valentine's Day, that does not make this a V-Day fic. Not in any way. Just a coincidence. Seriously.

Gerdie: The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

Series: Yami no Matsuei
Title: Shades of Brown (see all the lovely yet shallow symbolism?)
Genre: can't say ^^/ Read it to the end to see.
Rating: G
Pairing: Tatsumi/Tsuzuki . Anything else would be like doing a 58 or 39 fic. Loathsome.
Summary: Poor Tsuzuki. He just can't catch a break.
Disclaimer: The usual. And also, this is my first Tatsuki in a REALLY long time.

The steel grey clouds that hung low in the skies over Kyushuu released a long, low, menacing rumble, the god’s final warning of the approaching storm. Scarcely before it had died away, the sky tore in two with a fierce scream of
protest, setting the air crackling with electrical energy and releasing a torrent of driving rain upon the dusty streets.

Tsuzuki Asato turned dull, empty eyes towards the clouds, squinting involuntarily as the rain hit his face. Eventually his foggy mind registered through the pinprick sensation bombarding every inch of his skin that it was pouring, and that he was standing in it. It never occurred to him to find a convenient awning or duck under an eave, or even to revert to spirit form. He didn't feel the cold.

Aimlessly Tsuzuki wandered down the abandoned streets, splashing unheeded through the newly formed mud puddles. He felt so empty inside, so empty and dark. How could this have happened to him again? The first time, the pain
of loss nearly shattered him; there had been no reason for this half existence they all carried on day after countless day. But then he had come back, and Tsuzuki
thought he would die of joy.

And now that joy had departed again, stamped out like a half-burnt match.

Tsuzuki smiled darkly. But what more could be expected? He certainly wasn’t deserving of such happiness, such pure elation. It was a sin to be completely content day after day, like handing back to a thief the things he had been caught stealing, and then shaking his hand instead of throwing him into prison. No, Tsuzuki though, he’d brought this upon himself, just like always.

The shinigami did not know where he was going. In fact, he did not really know that he was moving at all, or even that he was still living.

Tsuzuki heard the voice, somewhere in a dimly lit corner of his mind; a mind that, against all odds, still held the tiny bit of love and hope that remained in his heart. The voice became louder; it was gentle but urgent, so familiar. Just the
sound of it replayed vague but deeply loved memories...

He became aware of the comforting weight of a hand on his shoulder.

....soft skin that smelled like soap...

Opening his eyes to reality, one that made everything seem better, Tsuzuki looked up to meet velvet blue eyes.

...those eyes...often so cold, but also capable -just for him- of warmth, and so much intensity that you had to look away but found you couldn't....

“Tatsumi?”

The older man’s eyes flashed with relief for an indiscernible second before they became annoyed.

“Tsuzuki-san, what on earth are you doing? You are completely soaked.” Tatsumi handed the dripping man his umbrella and opened another for himself before looking at Tsuzuki in extreme dismay.

“And your coat and suit are ruined.” He took Tsuzuki’s arm. “Come on, it is time to go home. You will catch a cold if you remain in those wet clothes and I must apply some spot remover to the mud stains before they set.”

Tsuzuki didn’t move.

Tatsumi turned around and noted the look of utter despair in his partner’s eyes.

“What is wrong?” he asked, refraining from tacking this time onto the end of the question.

Huge tears welled up in Tsuzuki’s violet eyes.

“Tatsumi,” he cried, grabbing the man in a death-glomp and burying his face into Tatsumi’s chest, “it’s awful!”

“What is awful?” Tatsumi asked, starting to feel a bit alarmed.

Tsuzuki’s lips quivered, a short warning before the inevitable wail.

“Tatsumi, my favourite chocolatier has gone out of business again!”

Ne, how was it?

*crickets*
