Games Galore

Tuesday night C4 was cancelled again. Ken and Daryl came over and we played Dominion. The game says it takes 30 minutes. I was explaining it to 3 new players and had played experienced it only twice before. It took us over 2 hours. Ken won by using lots of militia. The game says that Curses are used in every game, but I can’t see a reason to take them out unless there’s a Witch in play?

During this past weekend, we drove to Waltham to give my sister and her boyfriend their Christmas present. We got them Build Your Own-Opoly. I know she’ll have fun creating money, places, spaces and cards as she sets up a classic game.

She had asked me what I wanted to do over the weekend and I told her I had a bunch of new games that I wanted to play. We had a nice time with them.

It was late on Friday when we arrived. Patrick had a full day of work, so we got there about 11:30. We played Ticket To Ride and Patrick went out and won before I could complete a three track area that would have given me two more complete routes.

Saturday morning after a potato/egg/ham/cheese casserole we played St. Petersburg. Andy budgeted well, got the tax collector and won. Neither Andy nor Jax would keep too many cards in their hand, so Aristocrats and Trading cards didn’t get out on the board as much as I would’ve liked.

We played Turns and Taxis for the first time with 4 players. I lucked out getting two 7 city routes before the end, along with the victory point for one for each color.

We played one of their games - Uno Flash. Unlike the Uno that spits cards at you, the premise with this one is that you never know who the next person playing a card will be. You could be hit with your own Draw 2. Reverse doesn’t exist. There’s an extra card for slapping. It is electronic and everyone has their own button (think Jeopardy and Simon combined) in front of them. Your play is timed and you hit your button after each play, so the computer can randomly choose the next person to go. If someone plays a Slap (Hand) card, they hit the SLAP button first and then all players have to tap their own button. The person to tap last picks up two cards. This is a fast and fun little game, with only a few rule adjustments to the original game.

Jax made enchiladas for a late lunch with rice and beans on the side. Early we had chips and dip as well (the dip being cream cheese, salsa and cheddar heated up).

While Andy got ready for his night gig, we taught Jax Dominion. I won the first game, but she was a close second. She didn’t like the Remodel card. We replaced it with the Feast. I replaced the Mine with the Council Room and Patrick took the Woodcutter out and we put in the Chancellor. I wanted the price of the cards to be the same. We then played that way. It made for a very different game and she won this one. I think I will eventually like using the place holders for a random 10 selection.

Saturday night we drove into Norwood to support Andy and his band, Party of 9. They had some new songs added since the last time we saw them, and are becoming more comfortable with what they do. The sign outside advertised them as a Horn Band. We watched some people dance. We labeled some of them. Hugh Hefner had had lessons and he danced with a skinny Bette Midler (think of her Janis Joplin Rose days). She was older and seemed to be on a different rhythm than him. A ‘funky white boy’ had amusing faces and did the stereotypical “I’m straight, but let me spoof by dancing with another man for a few seconds” segment. Dr Ruth was present, and a woman who looked like the drag queen Ruby Rims. A cute, slim pony-tailed girl danced well with her tall lanky boyfriend who reminded me of one of my auditors. In the back, another trained guy danced with Crystal Carrington. I tried a swing with Jax during Zoot Suit Riot. We ordered a sampler platter, and met her friends Denise and Andy’s cousin Barbara. Dave also stopped by. Oh, and Tom Cruise was the barback while one bouncer was pretty hot.

Sunday morning we showed them Tongiaki. Jax won. We also got Andy into a game of Dominion while Jacqueline showered.

I think they enjoyed them. Jax was glad none of them dealt with Trivia.
